11-acre woods fire contained in west Pontotoc County

TOCCOPOLA, Miss. (WTVA) - Multiple fire departments and the Mississippi Forestry Commission responded to an 11-acre woods fire near Highway 334 in Toccopola.

The smoke was large enough to be picked up on radar. Dry conditions and high winds allowed the fire to spread quickly and jump the road at one point.

Firefighters now have the fire at 100% containment.

Thaxton Fire Chief Kenny Pennington said the fire started as a controlled burn before wind carried sparks across the road and into the woods.

The Mississippi Forestry Commission is asking residents to hold off on burning debris due to dry and windy conditions.
