TUPELO – Mississippi House Speaker Jason White said he doesn't expect any major pieces of legislation to pass during the 2027 session since it's an election year, but he still sees some opportunity to take on some issues.

"We're trying to look forward and see where we can go," said White, a Republican from West who was first elected to the state legislature in 2011 and was named House Speaker in 2024. "Considering it's an election year coming, you know my members who don't have an opponent when qualifying time is over in February, they'll be willing to vote on any bill we want to vote on. But those that get an opponent, it'll be hard pressed to get them to vote on much of anything."
