Heat advisory in place for Saturday’s Magnolia Bowl in Oxford
OXFORD, Miss. (WTVA) — Heat advisories are in place for all of Lafayette County on Saturday as temperatures are expected to reach the upper 90s, and possibly triple digits, during the Magnolia Bowl.
The heat index could feel like more than 105 degrees.
Fans face heat at multiple events
Saturday will be mostly sunny, with temperatures in the mid-to-upper 90s. Many fans are expected to be out early Saturday morning for College GameDay, then head to the Grove to tailgate before going into the game.
Some natural shade from trees in the Grove is gone because of damage from January’s ice storm. Tents will be set up, but according to the report, they will not provide much relief.
Rowdy Staten, an Ole Miss student attending all three events Saturday, said he plans to prepare the night before.
“I guess drink a lot of water the night before to be honest, get all of those electrolytes in the night before. Just try to get into the shade, try not to be in the sun all day, kind of pace yourself being out as much,” Staten said.
Student section, visitor sideline face more sun
Fans sitting in the student section or on the visitors’ sideline will be in direct sun for most of the game. The sun will set just before 7 p.m., but that side of the stadium could be 10 to 20 degrees hotter for fans sitting there.
Vaught-Hemingway Stadium allows fans to bring in one sealed 20-ounce water bottle.
Fans are advised to hydrate before the game. Anyone drinking alcohol is advised to drink water between drinks, since alcohol increases dehydration.
