NEW DELHI: India's Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) lost communication with the Panama-flagged cargo ship Ocean Winner, which sank off the eastern coast of India, the Indian Coast Guard said.

The Coast Guard has rescued two individuals who were aboard lifeboats. However, the cause of the sinking has yet to be identified, as the vessel was carrying a cargo of iron ore.

Indian Coast Guard spokesperson Commandant Amit Uniyal said the vessel had 24 crew members on board, including 20 Chinese, three Myanmar nationals, and one Bangladeshi.

Local sources reported that MRCC received information earlier regarding the loss of communication with the vessel, along with a request for search-and-rescue assistance from the company operating the ship.
