CORINTH, Miss. (WTVA) – Corinth is preparing to host President Donald Trump on Monday for a rally in support of U.S. Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith.
The visit comes 11 days before the midterms. Hyde-Smith is running against Scott Colom.
Colom hosted former Vice President Kamala Harris at a rally in Columbus and campaigned with former Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg on the Mississippi Coast.
Trump will stump for Hyde-Smith in Corinth on Monday.
It is the first time a president has visited Alcorn County since the Franklin D. Roosevelt administration.
Preparations underway
Crossroads Arena has set up an AT&T mobile cell tower in the parking lot for the event. Paint was laid on roads surrounding the arena.
The county and city are on cleanup, grass cutting, and litter patrol.
“We’re we’re cleaning up the 72 highway, then Gaines Road, some surrounding roads in the area,” Corinth Mayor Ralph Dance said. “We’ve been mowing and different things like that. We want things to look very presentable for when our president comes in. The county is doing that also. We’re just trying to clean up and make sure that we shine when he’s here.”
Dance said the message for locals and visitors Monday is to be patient, expect delays, and understand the visit is a big deal for the city.
“This is something new to us, so there may be times where we may not know where exactly you need to be. So just be kind,” Dance said.
Traffic and parking
The city is asking people to plan and arrive early.
“We’re limited on space, and just be aware when you go out there in that area you may be parking on the side of the road. Just don’t be parking in front of people’s driveways; don’t interfere with the businesses,” Dance said. “Try to be kind and understanding when they ask you not to park where you are going to park.”
There will be an increase in police presence ahead of the weekend and on Monday.
