HOUSTON, Miss. (WTVA) – The Chickasaw County Courthouse in Houston is undergoing a multi-phase preservation project.

The project includes a new roof, replacement of exterior doors, fresh exterior paint, and improvements to the courthouse interior.

State and federal funding made the renovations possible.

The county received $750,000 from the Mississippi Legislature, $1.05 million from Rep. Trent Kelly, and another $500,000 from the state to match a U.S. Department of Agriculture grant for the project.

County supervisors said the improvements are long overdue.

“You can’t fix a pretty work until you get the foundation, on the ceiling and roof. So we got a grant, so that’s underway now. We found out there is a lot of rotten wood on top,” said Margaret Futral, Chickasaw County District 5 supervisor.

The multi-phase renovation is expected to be completed next year.
