I bemoaned the approach of putting an icon in every menu item by default which shipped with macOS Tahoe \u2014 but now it\u2019s gone in Golden Gate!\nJohn Gruber wrote about this reversion back in June, including the fact that Apple\u2019s new Human Interface Guidelines specifically call out Tahoe\u2019s approach to menus as an example of what not to do on macOS.\n\n\nAs the old saying goes, it takes a big man corporation to admit when they\u2019re wrong.\nAs I mentioned in my original post, one of the arguments I had in my quiver against this practice was \u201cApple doesn\u2019t do it\u201d. But once Apple started putting icons in all their menus in Tahoe, I lost a persuasive point in my argument.\nBut now, I think I have an argument that\u2019s even stronger than before!\nIt\u2019s no longer: \u201cApple doesn\u2019t put icons in their menus.\u201d \nIt\u2019s: \u201cApple tried putting icons in all their menus, and even they went back on it!\u201d\nThey designed it, shipped it, lived with it for a year, then publicly changed their guidance on it. To me, that\u2019s a lot more persuasive than simply saying, \u201cApple doesn\u2019t do this.\u201d\nChoosing not to do something you\u2019ve never done is one thing.\nChoosing not to do something you\u2019ve done is experience.\nThat\u2019s the essence of life: learning by doing."
