In London an estimated 250,000 people attended the solidarity demonstration paused at Westminster Bridge to allow the supportive pair to take photographs with them.\nIn a statement to mark International Day for Palestine, Saturday 10 October, the Communist Party of Britain said it \u201csalutes the mass solidarity movements forcing the UK government policy change on Palestine.\u201d\nThe CPB has called \u201cfor all necessary action to end Israel\u2019s continuing genocide of the Palestinians and illegal occupation, and for maximum attendance on the National March for Palestine: Three years of genocide \u2013 stop arming Israel \u2013 sanctions NOW!\u201d\nNOBEL RECOGNITION\nIn related news, South African international jurist and human rights defender Navi Pillay has been awarded the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize. She was instrumental in the finding that Israel is committing genocide. Amnesty International\u2019s Secretary General, Agn\u00e8s Callamard said:\n\u201cWe pay tribute to Navi Pillay whose commitment to international law, unwavering independence and guiding moral light have made her one of the most respected human rights figures of our time. Not only does this award honour an extraordinary individual, it also comes at a time when everything Navi Pillay stands for is coming under increasing attack, as powerful states attempt to hollow out the rule of law and jettison fundamental international rules and norms.\n\u201cFrom her early days as a young lawyer fighting apartheid in South Africa, Navi Pillay showed a courage and humanity that should inspire us all.\u201d\n\u201cThis award is recognition that international justice is the cornerstone of any lasting peace in the world. Her life\u2019s work has been a powerful challenge to impunity for war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide \u2013 most recently while leading the landmark UN inquiry that found Israel responsible for genocide in Gaza.\n\u201cNavi Pillay\u2019s richly deserved award is a collective win for those on the frontlines in the fight for human rights, who continue speaking out and standing up for justice, accountability and the rule of law.\u201d\n\u201cNavi Pillay\u2019s richly deserved award is a collective win for those on the frontlines in the fight for human rights, who continue speaking out and standing up for justice, accountability and the rule of law.\u201d\nBACKGROUND\nPillay started her career as a defence lawyer for anti-apartheid activists and was the first woman to open a law firm in what was then known as the Natal province in 1967.\nShe went on to be appointed an acting judge in the High Court in South Africa in 1995 and in the same year was elected by the UN General Assembly to be a judge on the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, where she served for eight years as president. She also served as an International Criminal Court judge from 2003 to 2008.\nIn 2008, Navi Pillay was appointed as the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights. In 2021, she was appointed chair of the UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory. She oversaw the UN report which found that Israel was committing genocide in Gaza.\nIsrael\u2019s illegal occupation of the West Bank and genocidal siege of Gaza must be dismantled. Comrades turned up, showed the flag and sold/distributed Guardians.\nAt rallies in Naarm/Melbourne, on Gadigal land in Sydney, in Borloo/Perth, in Nipaluna/Hobart, thousands turned out to demand:\n\nthat Australia stop arming Israel\n\n(the government hides behind the fiction that Australia is just a part of a large weapons chain and Penny Wong\u2019s laughable pretence that F-35 bombers have \u2018non-lethal\u2019 parts)\n\nthat Australia sanction Israel\nthat Australia speaks out more clearly against the ongoing genocide.\n\nDemonstrations in Naarm/Melbourne and Sydney saw huge turnouts, including Jews Against the Occupation, giving the lie to the story that there\u2019s anything anti-semitic about opposing an ongoing genocide.\nIn Naarm/Melbourne a crowd of thousands turned out.\nMany marched with their unions and professional groups. Health workers marched together, defying the recent imposition of the dangerous and contentious IHRA definition of anti-semitism on their authorising body APHRA.\nIn Nipaluna/Hobart, Greens Senator Nick McKim attended to say \u201cstop the slaughter, and free Palestine.\u201d\nThe Tasmanian Palestine Advocacy network\u2019s Feras Shaheen told the ABC that new measures were needed to end the war in Gaza, and urged everyone to do what they can.\nNala Mansell of the Tasmanian Aboriginal Centre and Feras Shaheen, from the Tasmanian Palestine Advocacy Network, spoke, urging the crowd to keep up their advocacy and for everyone to do what they can in their workplace/town.\nIn Tarntanya/Adelaide Greens Senator Barbara Pocock spoke, urging the Albanese government to take real action.\nThere were rallies to mark the day worldwide, in Berlin, London, New York and elsewhere.\n            \n\n                        \n    \n        Related Stories"
