Check it out:%0A%0Ahttps%3A%2F%2Fwww.chiangraitimes.com%2Fbangkok%2Fpolice-seize-two-tons-of-crystal-meth%2F) (index.html#) BANGKOK – In one of the most significant narcotics interventions in recent months, police intercepted a massive shipment of crystal methamphetamine at a bustling Bangkok pier. Narcotics Suppression Bureau (NSB) police officers discovered nearly 2,000 kilograms of (https://www.webmd.com/mental-health/addiction/crystal-meth-what-you-should_know) crystal meth , commonly known as “ice,” hidden inside a pickup truck. The vehicle was in the process of being loaded onto a commercial ferry destined for the popular tourist island of Koh Samui. The operation unfolded on Friday morning at the (https://www.theseahorseferry.com/en/) Seahorse Ferry Bangkok Pier , located on Rat Burana Road. Acting on intelligence regarding a long-haul smuggling route, officers flagged a suspicious pickup truck equipped with an enclosed cargo box. Upon inspection, police discovered dozens of black packages stacked tightly within the vehicle. Preliminary tests confirmed the contents were high-purity crystal methamphetamine. The sheer volume of the seizure—totaling approximately two metric tons—highlights the scale of the illegal trade currently moving through the capital. According to Pol Lt Gen Archayon Kraithong, commissioner of the NSB, the trafficking syndicate used a sophisticated logistics strategy to evade detection. The police investigation revealed several key tactics used by the group: Northern Origins: The drugs were reportedly moved from northern and northeastern border regions into central Thailand. Strategic Storage: Before reaching Bangkok, the illicit cargo was held in temporary “safe houses” in Phetchabun and Prachin Buri provinces. The “Last Minute” Tactic: Smugglers arrived at the pier just before the ferry’s scheduled departure. They banked on the fact that staff and security would be in a rush to load the vessel, leading to less rigorous vehicle inspections. Separated Couriers: To minimize risk, the drivers would leave the vehicle on the ferry and fly separately to the destination. They would then reunite with the truck once it docked in Surat Thani. The raid led to the immediate arrest of the truck driver and an accomplice at the pier. Police identified them only as Mr. Natthawat, 26, and Mr. Mesa, 25. Following the initial bust, investigators moved quickly to track down other members of the ring. A follow-up operation in nearby Samut Prakan province resulted in the arrests of two more men, identified as Mr. Ekkasit, 37, and Mr. Nopparat, 31. All four individuals are currently being interrogated as police work to identify the “kingpins” financing the multi-million dollar shipment. Security at Sea Under Scrutiny The ferry operator, Seahorse Ferry, has moved to distance itself from the criminal activity. Sitthiphon Charoensuk, the company’s head of security, stated that the firm was not involved and has historically conducted regular vehicle checks. However, the fact that this route had been used successfully by traffickers multiple times in the past has raised questions about maritime security. In the wake of the seizure, ferry officials and narcotics officers are discussing the implementation of stricter scanning protocols for all vehicles boarding long-distance vessels. Thailand remains a major transit hub for narcotics produced in the “Golden Triangle”—the border region where Thailand, Laos, and Myanmar meet. While Koh Samui is a world-renowned vacation spot, authorities fear it is being used as a gateway to move drugs further south toward international waters. The Narcotics Suppression Bureau has vowed to increase its presence at private piers and transport hubs throughout Bangkok to prevent the city from serving as a “middle-man” for global drug syndicates.
