                    "By Liz Lee and Ben Blanchard\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBEIJING/TAIPEI, Oct 20 (Reuters)\u00a0\u2013\u00a0China\u2019s military said on Tuesday it had sent forces to watch a US warship that \u201cillegally\u201d entered waters around a disputed shoal in the South China Sea, while further north in the waterway, Taiwan reported a standoff with a Chinese vessel.\n\n\n\nChina views almost all of the South China Sea as its own territory, despite overlapping claims by Brunei, Malaysia, the Philippines, Taiwan and Vietnam, with recent tension most pronounced between Beijing and Manila.\n\n\n\nThe Chinese military\u2019s Southern Theatre Command said the USS Charleston \u201cillegally intruded\u201d into waters adjacent to Sabina Shoal in the Spratly Islands without Chinese government approval in the early hours of Tuesday.\n\n\n\n\u201cThe US action infringes upon China\u2019s sovereign rights and interests, jeopardizes maritime security, and is detrimental to regional peace and stability,\u201d it said in a statement.\n\n\n\n\u201cThe US side should immediately cease such activities.\u201d\n\n\n\nChina\u2019s navy dispatched forces to track and monitor the ship, it added.\n\n\n\nThe US Navy did not immediately respond to a request for comment. It generally refers to such missions as \u201cfreedom of navigation operations,\u201d though its last known one in the South China Sea was more than a year ago.\n\n\n\nA\u00a0Philippines\u2019 military spokesperson said the US ship \u201cdid not trespass into \u2018Chinese territory\u2019,\u201d adding that no nation had the authority to require prior permission for \u201clawful transit through international waters.\u201d\n\n\n\nLast month, a China Coast Guard vessel\u00a0rammed\u00a0a Philippine boat on a refueling mission near the same shoal, according to the Philippine Coast Guard.
