COLUMBUS, Miss. (WTVA) — The Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office and Community Benefit Committee are bringing back Horror at the Fairgrounds, a haunted house event organizers say will raise money for children in foster care and local families facing difficult times.
Admission costs $10, with an additional $5 for a hayride.
Lt. Rhonda Sanders, an organizer of the event, said there are more than 100 foster children in Lowndes County, and the proceeds will help give them what they want for Christmas.
“Just because they’re in foster care doesn’t mean they shouldn’t have an amazing Christmas, so that’s what we want to do,” Sanders said. “Our sheriff’s department and other agencies want to give back to these children and make sure they have one amazing Christmas.”
One hundred percent of the money earned from the concession stand will go directly to Lowndes County residents fighting cancer. The money can help cover medical expenses, gas, transportation to hospital appointments and other daily needs while they’re undergoing treatment.
Jane Jordan, owner of the fairgrounds, said being part of the event means supporting a cause that already does so much for the community.
“The fact that something was coming out here that I could do that just supported everything that the Community Benefit stands for, whether it’s helping buy turkeys or the Christmas gifts for the kids, it’s just all together with them,” Jordan said.
Horror at the Fairgrounds opens at 6 p.m. each night, Oct. 29 through 31, at the Columbus Fairgrounds on Highway 69 South.
