                    "LEFT: Andy McCarthy RIGHT: Donald Trump\nAndy McCarthy \u2014 prominent conservative legal commentator and former federal prosecutor \u2014 ripped President Donald Trump for giving \u201caid and comfort\u201d to Vladimir Putin. \nIn a scathing column for National Review, McCarthy \u2014 a former Fox News contributor \u2014 took Congress to task for not applying sufficient scrutiny on Trump\u2019s \u201calliance\u201d with Putin.\n\u201cPutin\u2019s war of aggression and hoped-for conquest against Ukraine, like his war of aggression and conquest in Georgia (swaths of which he has occupied for nearly two decades), is part of his quest to reconstitute America\u2019s Soviet enemy,\u201d McCarthy wrote. \u201cAnd President Donald Trump is giving him aid and comfort.\u201d\nMcCarthy added, \u201cIn a properly functioning republic, there would be immediate hearings about this week\u2019s shocking escalation of the Trump\u2013Putin alliance. Since the start of Trump\u2019s second term, it has been excruciating to watch America\u2019s president blame the victim, our ally Ukraine, for Putin\u2019s war of aggression.\u201d \nThe column comes on the heels of Trump striking a deal to buy Russian diesel and \u2014 late on Friday night \u2014 signing an executive order exempting Russia from sanctions he himself signed into law last month. The president has regularly blasted Ukraine\u2019s Volodymyr Zelensky \u2014 calling him \u201cnot a good guy for us to deal with\u201d in an interview on Thursday.\nMcCarthy was unsparing in his criticism of Trump\u2019s recent rhetoric.\n\u201cThis week, in lunatic public statements \u2026 the president again blamed Ukraine for the war and gratuitously insulted Zelensky,\u201d McCarthy said.  \nFinally, McCarthy zeroed in on the restriction to the Starshield satellite system \u2014 which, according to a Reuters report, came from the White House.  \n\u201cIf we \u2026 allow common sense to enter the equation, too many dark signs point in the direction of an American administration \u2014 at the very moment it was seeking Ukraine\u2019s capitulation and threatening to leave it defenseless by denying intelligence \u2014 taking conscious action that left Ukraine exposed to an intense attack, which Russia just happens to have conducted right at the perfect time,\u201d McCarthy wrote. \u201cThis is dark.
