In a (https://www.nationalreview.com/2026/10/congress-must-investigate-trumps-aid-and-comfort-to-putin/) scathing column for National Review , McCarthy — a former Fox News contributor — took Congress to task for not applying sufficient scrutiny on Trump’s “alliance” with Putin. “Putin’s war of aggression and hoped-for conquest against Ukraine, like his war of aggression and conquest in Georgia (swaths of which he has occupied for nearly two decades), is part of his quest to reconstitute America’s Soviet enemy,” McCarthy wrote. “And President Donald Trump is giving him aid and comfort.” McCarthy added, “In a properly functioning republic, there would be immediate hearings about this week’s shocking escalation of the Trump–Putin alliance. Since the start of Trump’s second term, it has been excruciating to watch America’s president blame the victim, our ally Ukraine, for Putin’s war of aggression.” The column comes on the heels of Trump (https://www.mediaite.com/media/news/senators-slam-trumps-diesel-deal-with-russia-in-rare-bipartisan-rebuke-runs-directly-counter-to-law/) striking a deal to buy Russian diesel and — late on Friday night — (https://www.mediaite.com/politics/trump/trump-shields-russia-from-new-sanctions-passed-by-congress-in-lindsay-grahams-name/) signing an executive order exempting Russia from sanctions he himself signed into law last month. The president has regularly blasted Ukraine’s Volodymyr Zelensky — calling him “not a good guy for us to deal with” in an (https://www.mediaite.com/politics/trump/trump-lashes-out-at-zelensky-not-a-good-guy-for-us-to-deal-with/) interview on Thursday . McCarthy was unsparing in his criticism of Trump’s recent rhetoric. “This week, in lunatic public statements … the president again blamed Ukraine for the war and gratuitously insulted Zelensky,” McCarthy said. Finally, McCarthy zeroed in on the restriction to the Starshield satellite system — which, (https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/order-limit-starshield-ukraine-came-inside-white-house-sources-say-2026-10-15/) according to a Reuters report , (https://www.mediaite.com/media/news/order-to-restrict-ukraines-starshield-satellite-system-came-from-inside-white-house-report/) came from the White House . “If we … allow common sense to enter the equation, too many dark signs point in the direction of an American administration — at the very moment it was seeking Ukraine’s capitulation and threatening to leave it defenseless by denying intelligence — taking conscious action that left Ukraine exposed to an intense attack, which Russia just happens to have conducted right at the perfect time,” McCarthy wrote. “This is dark. It demands answers. Now.” —— New: The Mediaite One-Sheet "Newsletter of Newsletters" Your daily summary and analysis of what the many, many media newsletters are saying and reporting.
