                    "BUCHAREST, Oct 17 (Reuters)\u00a0\u2013\u00a0Romanian F-16 fighter jets shot down two drones over the country\u2019s territorial waters on Saturday, the defense ministry said.\u00a0\n\n\n\nThe drones were brought down days after two chemical tankers were hit by drones near Romania\u2019s Black Sea coast, the latest in a series of attacks highlighting risks to commercial\u00a0shipping\u00a0on NATO\u2019s eastern flank.\n\n\n\nBoth vessels were anchored near the Sulina Canal, which links the Danube River to the Black Sea and is an export\u00a0route for Ukraine.\n\n\n\nNATO member Romania shares a 614-km (381-mile) border with Ukraine, much of it along the Danube, and has repeatedly reported Russian drone incursions into its airspace since Moscow\u2019s full-scale\u00a0invasion of Ukraine\u00a0in 2022.\n\n\n\nRomania started\u00a0shooting down such drones\u00a0earlier this year.\n\n\n\nThe defense ministry said the two drones entered Romanian waters in the Black Sea on Saturday at 1459 GMT and 1501 GMT, respectively.\n\n\n\nThe ministry did not specify the origin of the drones.\n\n\n\nThe two tankers struck earlier this week were hit by Russian drones, a NATO military source told Reuters. Romanian officials are still searching for seven missing crew members.\n\n\n\nAt least five other cargo ships have been hit near the coasts of Romania and neighboring Bulgaria in the past 10 days, with 23 sailors reported dead or missing. Most of those incidents occurred outside NATO territorial waters.\n\n\n\nIn Moldova, on Romania\u2019s northeast border, officials said a new drone had crashed in a northern district, near the border with Ukraine. Officials said there were no casualties or damage and specialists were trying to determine the drone\u2019s origin.\n\n\n\nThe number of drones violating Moldovan airspace has increased greatly in recent months.
