Second 18-year-old arrested in Artesia homicide

LOWNDES COUNTY – Deputies have arrested a second suspect in a Wednesday homicide in Artesia that claimed the life of a West Lowndes High School student.

Landyn Joel Brooks, 18, is charged with accessory after the fact. He was arrested late Thursday for assisting the alleged shooter, Jaquarious Dionta Brooks, also 18, in destroying evidence, according to a Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office press release.

Emergency crews responded around 7 p.m. Wednesday to the basketball court in downtown Artesia shortly after receiving multiple 911 calls reporting a shooting. They found Jaraquist Cunningham, 18, dead at the scene.

Jaquairous Brooks’ mother contacted Sheriff Eddie Hawkins Thursday to arrange her son’s surrender. He is charged with murder.

Both Jaquairous and Landyn Brooks remain in Lowndes County Adult Detention Center.

“Our thoughts and prayers remain with Jaraquist’s family, friends, classmates and the entire West Lowndes community as they continue to grieve this tragic loss,” Sheriff Eddie Hawkins said in the press release.
