COLUMBUS, Miss. (WTVA) – Red flag warnings are in effect for some counties in northeast Mississippi.
A red flag warning means that the threat of fires is extremely high. They can spread rapidly.
The combination of dry weather, low humidity, and windy conditions creates an environment in which one ember can cause a lot of damage.
“Limit how much fire you try to use even if you’re cooking,” said Michael Walker, the fire marshal for Columbus Fire & Rescue. “Do not toss out cigarettes at all. Do not use your outdoor fireplaces at all, as those embers can take off. If you’re out cooking, make sure you’re out in attendance with it the entire time and make sure it is completely out.”
