(Slay The Spire 2 Official Trailer Image Necrobinder) © Mega Crit If you’re sick of hearing the words “vibe-coded” and “Claude,” trust me, you’re not alone. Unfortunately, the recent vibe-coding craze is a newsworthy topic, because (https://kotaku.com/we-might-be-cooked-as-these-vibe-coded-web-browser-ports-of-halo-the-simpsons-hit-and-run-and-gta-vice-city-seem-to-work-perfectly-2000743300) the sudden surge in web browser “ports,” the (https://kotaku.com/i-dont-want-to-play-your-ai-generated-mod-that-puts-skate-3-inside-of-modern-warfare-2-inside-of-minecraft-2000738660) Skate 3 -inside- Modern Warfare 2 -style mash-up mods, the (https://kotaku.com/the-vibe-coders-have-come-for-nintendo-and-obviously-this-wont-end-well-2000745258) “native” Nintendo Switch PC “ports,” and almost all of those (https://kotaku.com/the-physical-revolution-on-jailbroken-ps5s-now-has-people-emulating-ps3-discs-2000744606) recent PlayStation jailbreaking advancements can all be tied back to the release of Anthropic’s Claude Opus 5.5 update on September 22. As much as I hate writing about it and most of you hate reading about it, the truth of the matter is that we’re not the ones getting the short end of the stick here. Whether you love ‘em or hate ‘em, video game publishers are the ones grappling with the impact of these advancements right now. Case in point, news of Claude Opus 5.5’s latest capabilities has become so difficult to ignore that (https://kotaku.com/xbox-labs-is-a-big-announcement-about-ai-that-doesnt-mention-ai-once-2000745355) Xbox CEO Asha Sharma addressed the recent web-browser ports in an Xbox Wire blog post earlier this week. Publishers are also painfully aware of Opus 5.5’s ability to expedite the decompilation and recompilation of video game source code. GitHub’s DMCA request (https://github.com/github/dmca/tree/master/2026/10) logs are currently littered with vibe-coding-related takedown notices from video game publishers, and X posts (https://x.com/RadiantOpti/status/2108068628793082338) featuring the evidence of the aforementioned web browser ports are getting (https://x.com/olivers_tools/status/2107937496634126643) hit with legal notices on an hourly basis. But all this leaves us with a yet-unanswered question: where does the video game industry go from here? Is all this vibe-coding stuff an overblown craze, or are developers and publishers genuinely concerned for the future? To that end, I reached out to two very relevant figures for answers: Dr Luke Dicken, Take-Two’s former head of artificial intelligence, and Emilio Coppola, Godot Engine’s executive director. Given his work experience, Dicken is an especially pertinent man to interview on the topic. Starting in 2019, he served as Zynga’s director of applied AI before becoming its senior director of applied AI in 2022. He also (https://kotaku.com/take-two-ai-zynga-layoffs-gta-2000684344) led Take-Two Interactive’s AI research as head of artificial intelligence until April 2026 , after Take-Two Interactive bought Zynga in January 2025. He currently works at Ludic AI, a consulting service that offers “the best-practice use of AI technologies for games-adjacent verticals,” which he founded in 2025. His portfolio of work might lead you to assume that Dicken would downplay the dangers that AI currently poses to developers. Surprisingly, you would be very, very wrong, as Dicken told me that “for as many problems as AI claims to be solving, it’s introducing at least as many new ones for the industry to react to.” “This new wave of decompile-and-port is definitely something that developers and publishers need to take seriously,” stated Dicken. “It strikes me as noteworthy that this is being enabled by the subsidization of GenAI costs by the frontier labs, so this is an artificially enlarged problem right now, but it’s not one that’s going away, even if it might reduce in scale when the AI bubble pops.” Hearing someone in Dicken’s line of work state that the AI bubble popping is a matter of “when,” opposed to “if,” may astonish you. However, he took a similar stance in a recent (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r_ScnjXsxTM) interview with PocketGamerbiz . (Ex-Take-Two AI chief Luke Dicken warns AI bubble could "make 2008 look like a walk in the park") Dicken told me that he believes “we could see more of a push towards systems of protecting the games” that are now threatened by AI’s sudden ability to decompile source code. Dicken stated that, as many have already theorized, said systems “will probably be consumer-hostile in an effort to combat this sort of thing.” That means “more invasive DRM, platform-level solutions, and probably more of a push towards streaming solutions since nobody can decompile what they can’t get their hands on.” Emilio Coppola’s opinion on the subject is relevant for very different reasons. Coppola is the executive director of Godot Engine and the founder of its non-profit organization, the Godot Foundation. Even if you’ve not heard of Godot Engine, you’ve almost definitely heard of many of the games that utilize it, as it’s the open-source game engine behind the likes of Slay the Spire II , Brotato , Buckshot Roulette , and Dome Keeper . Coppola’s stance on the recent evolution of AI coding was similarly negative, although he was far more concerned with the platforms that are “enabling” the “bad actors” who utilize said advancements to thrive. But which platforms is Coppola referring to here? Primarily, Steam. While Coppola stated that he believes “a developer has very little ways of protecting themselves in today’s climate,” he noted that this “was also the case” before Opus 5.5, specifically in reference to video game piracy. However, he asserted that “the main difference” when it comes to recent AI coding advancements “is that people are making a profit out of it.” “[The] burden shouldn’t fall on the developers to protect their games against bad actors,” stated Coppola. “The burden should fall onto the platforms who are enabling this sort of behavior. A platform like Steam is profiting and allowing bad actors to sell low-quality clones of a project that a developer worked on, yet they never get the blame.” The “bad actors” Coppola is referring to here are (https://kotaku.com/the-proliferation-of-copycats-on-steam-makes-discovering-original-games-like-finding-a-needle-in-a-haystack-2000734794) the people producing AI vibe-coded ripoffs of indie games . Said ripoffs are then repackaged under extremely similar names and subsequently published on Steam. Dicken’s thoughts on the matter echoed Coppola’s, as he told me that “AI is empowering people to do things at an unprecedented scale—both for good and ill.” “Ripping off someone else’s games, cracking games, decompiling them…none of these are new behaviors, but they are now more easily accessed and happening much more broadly,” continued Dicken. “Our defensive structures—social, legal, and technical—are all lagging behind, but I think over time there’s going to be a stabilization. I hope.” Of course, this isn’t the first time we’ve heard about the Godot Engine in relation to vibe-coding. Back in February, Godot Engine’s project manager, Rémi Verschelde, (https://kotaku.com/godot-ai-github-code-indie-unity-2000669746) bemoaned the wave of “AI slop” pull requests on Godot’s GitHub . Eventually, in July, the maintainers of Godot’s GitHub decided they’d had enough. (https://kotaku.com/indie-game-engine-will-require-all-code-to-be-human-authored-following-an-ai-code-shitshow-2000711737) A new rule was then added to its contribution policy : “We require all code to be human authored.” “I’ve heard many developers worried and anxious to even share early access versions of their games because of the risk of it being clones by somebody else.” I asked Coppola if the arrival of Claude Opus 5.5 had made Godot’s vibe-coding problem on GitHub worse. He said that he didn’t believe its decompiling capabilities had “affected Godot at all,” as Godot’s engine has always been “public and open source.” However, Coppola believes it may have affected Godot’s developers in a different way entirely, as he’s heard that “many developers” are now too “worried and anxious to even share early-access versions of their games,” as there is suddenly a “risk of it being cloned by somebody else.” There are, unfortunately, lots of examples we could pull from here to illustrate Coppola’s point, but one such example is especially applicable: on October 7, a DMCA (https://github.com/github/dmca/blob/master/2026/10/2026-10-06-slay-the-spire.md) request from Mega Crit, the publishers and developers behind Slay the Spire II , was processed on GitHub. It states that an infringing GitHub page contained Slay the Spire II’s “proprietary source code, which has never been published or licensed for public distribution.” However, to leave us on a more hopeful note, Dicken and Coppola also agreed on one specific front: while AI’s capability to produce and iterate code may have drastically improved, both assured me that they feel it can never replace the creative capabilities of the video game industry’s talented developers. While Dicken stated that we may have already found ourselves “in a world where ideas and execution are cheap,” how developers and publishers choose to “operate” their games and their businesses will be the “core differentiators” moving forward: “AI can clone a game, it can decompile an existing thing and repurpose it, but what it can’t do is find the fun of the next thing. That’s still a uniquely human endeavor.” Likewise, although Coppola noted that some “might benefit” from the recent “advancements” of AI coding, he also stated that “coding is rarely the roadblock in making a successful game,” and that “good game design” will always endure: “Having good game design and basically ‘something that’s fun,’ it’s really difficult to do, no matter if you are the one coding or if it’s a robot doing it. So while some people might benefit from AI code, they will still need to solve the same issue that everybody else has to face: how to make a good game.” 🕹️ Level up your inbox Don’t miss the latest reviews, news and tips.
