Mother calls sheriff on son after fatal shooting

Jarquarious Dionata Brooks

A teen is charged with murder in a fatal shooting Wednesday at the basketball court in downtown Artesia.

Jarquarious Dionata Brooks, 18, was arrested Thursday morning after his mother called the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office.

Emergency crews responded around 7 p.m. Wednesday to the basketball court shortly after receiving multiple 911 calls reporting a shooting, Coroner Greg Merchant wrote in a text to members of the media. They found Jaraquist Cunningham, 18, dead on the scene.

Brooks’ mother contacted Sheriff Eddie Hawkins to arrange her son’s surrender, according to a press release from LCSO.

“Cunningham was a student at West Lowndes High School,” Hawkins wrote in the press release. “His death is a tragic loss. Our thoughts and prayers are with Cunningham’s family, friends, classmates, and the entire West Lowndes community during this difficult time.”

Brooks is being held in Lowndes County Adult Detention Center.
