(WTVA) — A home invasion turned deadly in Union County. Union County Sheriff Jimmy Edwards said the incident happened Thursday morning at approximately 4:00 at a home on County Road 176. He said an elderly man and woman were in bed at the time of the incident. An individual gained entry into the house, and the elderly man was shot dead. Coroner Pam Boman identified the man as Bobby McGill, 81. The alleged invader was injured and is in the hospital, the sheriff said. The sheriff later identified the alleged invader as Eric Basco. The woman safely escaped, Edwards added, and she called 911. The sheriff said while the woman escaped, her husband tried to fight off the intruder. “Mr. Bobby McGill, who’s 81 years old, had a struggle, and the guy, Mr. Bobby, had a pistol that looks like he kept in his chest of drawers and was trying to get to it, and I guess this guy got it and shot Mr. Bobby multiple times and killed him.” The sheriff said the intruder’s motive was likely burglary and that he went into a bathroom and shot himself.
