Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz said the victims' families have been notified. Bend Mayor Melanie Kebler said, "Today is an awful day for our community. Our hearts are broken as we mourn this tragedy and the profound impact it has had on so many people, especially the children, families, educators, and school staff whose lives have been forever changed." "To the families that have had loss tonight, we are with you and we will stay with you,"  Bend-La Pine School Superintendent Steve Cook said. "To our staff who helped our students and protected our kids today. We thank you. You did what no one should ever be asked to do." The suspect, who was armed with a long gun, forced entry into the school by shooting at locked doors, Chief Krantz said. (Have your say.) The bystander "definitely prevented more deaths," one source said. Update: From Bend Police: At approximately 12:59 p.m., Bend Police responded to Silver Rail Elementary on reports of an active shooter. The first call indicated that an unknown man had shot into a car. In the next minute, Deschutes County Dispatch received multiple 911 calls reporting that a person had entered the school and begun shooting. Dispatch sent out an alert tone to send all law enforcement to the scene. At 1:02 p.m., Bend Police officers were on the scene. Seconds later, officers reported the suspect had been shot and killed, possibly by a bystander. At this time, we have confirmed there are multiple victims. At least two people were transported to St. Charles Bend. Their status at this time is not known. Children are among the victims. Law enforcement is in the process of evacuating each classroom at Silver Rail Elementary. Students are being transported by Bend-La Pine Schools buses to Journey Church, 61303 S Highway 97, for reunification. We ask families and guardians to respond there. There will be a large law enforcement presence in the area of the school and at Journey Church for the foreseeable future. Please avoid the area. We know what a very difficult time this is for our community – we are thinking of the families and friends of Silver Rail Elementary and everyone in Bend and beyond who are affected by this terrible tragedy. “We are stunned and heartbroken by this senseless tragedy,” Bend-La Pine Schools Superintendent Steven Cook. “We extend our deepest sympathy to the families and to everyone affected by this violence. No words can adequately express the grief our community is experiencing. Our immediate priorities are caring for our students and staff and assisting law enforcement and emergency responders.” Update: From Bend Police:The reunification location for families will be located at Journey Church, 61303 S Highway 97 near Goodwill and Dairy Queen. Students' families are asked to respond there. Update: From Bend Police...The Bend Police Department is currently at Silver Rail Elementary School after a report of an active shooter. There is a large police presence in the area. Please avoid the area. We will share more information as soon as we can. BEND, Ore.
