The federal investigation into Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) is meant to culminate in the revocation of her citizenship, and ultimately her deportation, The Wall Street Journal reported on Wednesday.
On Monday, Homeland Security agents searched Omar’s home in Washington, D.C. as part of a probe into whether she or her late father, Nur Omar Mohamed, lied or gave misleading information in the 1990s when he sought legal status in the U.S. before they became U.S. citizens. When asked about the raid, President Donald Trump, who has baselessly claimed that Omar married her brother, denied he had anything to do with the investigation.
“I’ve always found her to be totally crooked, personally,” Trump said hours after the raid. “But that has nothing to do with me. I think she’s a terrible person, just a complainer. She comes from a country that is a non-country. And then she comes over here and she complains about our Constitution. I think she’s a terrible person.”
Citing U.S. officials and others familiar with the probe, the Journal said it centers on whether Omar or her father, who had fled war-ravaged Somalia, changed her age on her citizenship application to indicate she was 17 instead of 18. Had she been 17 at the time, her citizenship would have been automatically granted along with her father’s. However, if she were 18, she would have had to become naturalized separately. The congresswoman became a U.S. citizen in 2000 after her father brought her to the country in 1995.
To strip a naturalized citizen of their citizenship, the Department of Justice must sue and prove in federal court that the individual lied to obtain citizenship.
On Tuesday, U.S. Attorney Jeanne Pirro took the unusual step of revealing that her office has opened “several investigations” into Omar, who is facing reelection next month.
After the raid on her house, Omar accused the president of trying to “weaponize federal law enforcement,” stating, “I will not be silenced.” Many other prominent Democrats also criticized the search.
