The test-fire on Wednesday aimed to examine the reliability of war deterrents and improve the navy’s skill in performing strategic missions, the outlet said. Senior military officers observed the tests conducted at sea off the country’s east coast. KCNA added that the tests had no adverse impact on the security of neighbouring countries. North Korea is not yet believed to have launched a modern missile submarine in full operation. This is a top military priority of the country’s leader Kim Jong Un, who has overseen the development of a range of strategic ballistic and cruise missiles. Last year, Kim Jong Un (https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2025/12/25/north-koreas-kim-slams-us-seoul-nuclear-submarine-deal-as-offensive-act) criticised a nuclear submarine deal between the US and South Korea while he toured his country’s submarine production facility, where state media images showed an 8,700-tonne nuclear-powered missile submarine under construction. On his tour, he described the deal as a threat to the stability of the Korean Peninsula, KCNA reported. Recent developments Pyongyang has fired off a flurry of missiles in recent weeks. Earlier this week, North Korea (https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2026/10/12/north-korea-fires-multiple-ballistic-missiles-towards-the-sea) fired multiple ballistic missiles towards the sea off its east coast, adding to a series of tests as tensions between Seoul and Pyongyang are on the rise. Advertisement On October 3, North Korea (https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2026/10/2/north-korea-fires-ballistic-missile-towards-the-sea-south-korea-says) also tested a hypersonic intermediate-range missile designed to evade missile defences in South Korea and Japan. After the ballistic missile launch, Seoul’s Joint Chiefs of Staff spokesperson Jang Do-young said the move appeared to be a show of force as it came days after South Korea tested its own hypersonic weapon. Last week, South Korean President Lee Jae Myung oversaw the country’s first test firing of a hypersonic missile, a rare public showcase of a missile test by a South Korean president. Lee’s office said the hypersonic weapon, once fully developed, would enhance South Korea’s ability to strike key targets by surprise in the “Korean Peninsula theatre of operations”. Inter-Korean relations have further soured as a landmine (https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2026/10/6/south-korea-considers-steps-to-force-north-korea-apology-for-dmz-mine-blast) blast , which Seoul blamed on North Korea, wounded three soldiers in September in the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) between the two countries. A joint South Korean-United Nations investigation concluded that two landmines that exploded last month in the DMZ were planted by North Korean forces about a year ago, prompting Seoul to demand an official apology. Pyongyang has sharply accelerated military fortification along the DMZ as part of leader Kim Jong Un’s “hostile-states” policy, launched in 2023, to permanently sever ties with South Korea. Diplomatic efforts on the Korean Peninsula have stalled since the collapse of denuclearisation talks between Washington and Pyongyang in 2019 during the first Trump administration. While Trump has floated the possibility of meeting Kim Jong Un in his second term, no such meeting has materialised. aj-logo aj-logo aj-logo Advertisement About About Show more (https://www.aljazeera.com/about-us) About Us (https://www.aljazeera.com/code-of-ethics/) Code of Ethics (https://www.aljazeera.com/terms-and-conditions/) Terms and Conditions (https://www.aljazeera.com/eu-eea-regulatory/) EU/EEA Regulatory Notice (https://privacy.aljazeera.net/) Privacy Policy (https://privacy.aljazeera.net/cookie/) Cookie Policy (https://www.aljazeera.com/) Cookie Preferences (https://trust.aljazeera.net/accessibility/) Accessibility Statement (https://www.aljazeera.com/sitemap) Sitemap (https://careers.aljazeera.net/) Work for us Connect Connect Show more (https://network.aljazeera.net/en/contact?tid=6) Contact Us (https://www.aljazeera.com/user-accounts-help) User Accounts Help (https://commercial.aljazeera.net/) Advertise with us (https://www.aljazeera.com/stay-connected) Stay Connected (https://www.aljazeera.com/newsletters) Newsletters (https://sat.aljazeera.net/en) Channel Finder (https://www.aljazeera.com/schedule/) TV Schedule (https://www.aljazeera.com/podcasts/) Podcasts (https://webapps.aljazeera.net/aje/tips/) Submit a Tip (https://www.aljazeera.com/sponsored) Paid Partner Content Our Channels Our Channels Show more (http://aljazeera.net/) Al Jazeera Arabic (https://www.aljazeera.com/) Al Jazeera English (https://www.ajiunit.com/) Al Jazeera Investigative Unit (https://www.aljazeeramubasher.net/) Al Jazeera Mubasher (http://doc.aljazeera.net/) Al Jazeera Documentary (http://balkans.aljazeera.net/) Al Jazeera Balkans (http://ajplus.net/) AJ+ Our Network Our Network Show more (http://studies.aljazeera.net/en/) Al Jazeera Centre for Studies (http://training.aljazeera.net/) Al Jazeera Media Institute (http://learning.aljazeera.net/) Learn Arabic (http://liberties.aljazeera.com/en) Al Jazeera Centre for Public Liberties & Human Rights (http://forum.aljazeera.net/) Al Jazeera Forum (https://hotels.aljazeera.net/en) Al Jazeera Hotel Partners Follow Al Jazeera English: (https://www.facebook.com/aljazeera) facebook (https://twitter.com/ajenglish) twitter (https://www.youtube.com/aljazeeraenglish) youtube (https://www.instagram.com/aljazeeraenglish/?hl=en) instagram-colored-outline (https://www.aljazeera.com/xml/rss/all.xml) rss (https://bsky.app/profile/aljazeera.com) bluesky (https://www.tiktok.com/@aljazeeraenglish) tiktok-colored-outline (Al Jazeera Media Network logo) © 2026 Al Jazeera Media Network
