He denies all the charges and has pleaded not guilty.Wearing a black pinstripe suit, a black and white shirt and a necktie, Brand stood in the dock at Southwark crown court in London on Wednesday as the prosecution opened its case.The prosecutor, Riel Karmy-Jones KC, told jurors: \u201cThe circumstances of the offending were as wide and as varied as the defendant\u2019s career. Offending took place in a number of locations: a hotel room, workplaces, a toilet cubicle in a bar and at his home address.\u201cSome of the women involved protested and said no, others had no opportunity to protest and no opportunity to react to his advances but that didn\u2019t matter to the defendant. Regardless of who they were and what they said or did, Russell Brand was not deterred.\u201cHis desire, strong desire, for some form of sexual contact was indiscriminate and voracious. He could be nice when he wanted to be \u2013 funny undoubtedly, charming, likable even when he wanted something in return, but then demanding, entitled, a flirt with a huge sexual appetite, childlike in his expectation that his every desire should be met.\u201cHe was ruthless, he was calculated and manipulative, and the prosecution say, he was a sexual predator.\u201dShe said Brand had told a former flatmate, Mark Pinheiro, that he wanted to sleep with 5,000 women in his lifetime and had strategies to achieve that aim, allegedly saying: \u201cAll you have to do is tell them what they need to hear.\u201dThe court heard the earliest allegation dated back to the 1999 Labour party conference in Bournemouth, when Brand was not yet famous. He allegedly raped a woman at a hotel after meeting her at a fringe cabaret show where he was performing.He is accused of stripping off his clothes and performing Basil Fawlty-style silly walks like an ostrich before the attack.\u201cShe remembers the weight of him on top of her, she couldn\u2019t move, she was finding it hard to breathe, but she recalls trying not to let him kiss her, and saying \u2018no\u2019,\u201d the prosecutor said.\u201cShe knows that he groped her, was touching her, he grabbed her breasts, he was trying to kiss her, he was putting his fingers in her mouth and doing things with his tongue that were horrible, like a lizard.\u201dBrand allegedly raped her without a condom, before telling her: \u201cDon\u2019t worry, I get tested regularly for STDs, I don\u2019t have anything.\u201d He then behaved as if nothing had happened, wrote down his email address, and said he had to get back to his mother.A court artist sketch by Elizabeth Cook of Russell Brand appearing in the dock at Southwark crown court. Photograph: Elizabeth Cook/PAHe denied the allegation in a prepared statement to police, saying he had had sexual encounters in countless locations and scenarios, often with people he had just met.Giving evidence on Wednesday afternoon, Pinheiro, who had also performed in the cabaret, told jurors that Brand had said he was \u201cgoing to go and get laid\u201d when their final show ended. He added that Brand appeared \u201cdiscombobulated\u201d the next day and was eager to leave Bournemouth. Pinheiro said Brand eventually told him about having had sex with a woman, and said he made the comment: \u201cI think I may have gone a bit too far.\u201dUnder cross-examination by Brand\u2019s defence barrister Ian Winter KC, Pinheiro was questioned about the reliability of his account but insisted he had merely described Brand\u2019s behaviour.Brand\u2019s celebrity status was growing by the time of the second allegation in 2001, as was his \u201csense of entitlement to have what he wanted whenever he wanted it\u201d, the prosecutor said.The second complainant was working at MTV when she offered to show Brand to the toilets where he allegedly indecently assaulted her. Brand is accused of grabbing the woman by the forearm and trying to pull her into the male toilets. He had what she described as a desperate, wild-eyed look on his face, as he said: \u201cPlease, please come in \u2013 oh go on.\u201dShe was shocked and mentioned what had happened when she returned from the toilet but never formally reported it.The third woman had attended a friend\u2019s birthday at a bar in Soho in London in 2004 when Brand allegedly sexually assaulted her by grabbing and squeezing her breasts with a \u201cbig, weird grin\u201d on his face. He then grabbed her arm and pulled her into the toilets where he orally raped her, the court heard. The prosecutor said: \u201cAs she was saying: \u2018What are you doing? I don\u2019t want to do this,\u2019 he just said: \u2018Oh come on, don\u2019t be a spoilsport. You want to.\u2019\u201dThe fourth woman was working at a radio station when she alleged that Brand \u201csloppily and aggressively\u201d kissed her and grabbed her breasts and buttocks in a sexual assault alleged to have taken place in 2004 or 2005.She pushed him away and told him to \u201cfuck off\u201d to which Brand sniggered. \u201cThese women meant nothing to him and perhaps he found their protestations amusing, funny?\u201d the prosecutor said.The fifth complainant was a fan of Brand and had gone with a friend to see the comedian perform at the Hammersmith Apollo in London in 2009. According to the woman\u2019s friend, at the end of the show, Brand said: \u201cIf I do speak to you and ask you to come to my dressing room, please know I am not doing that to give you an autograph. I will give you an autograph, but it will be on the inside of your uterus.\u201d He said the age range of people he would sleep with was \u201cfrom 16 to death\u201d.After the show, the woman was invited backstage and later to his dressing room, where she refused to have sex with Brand. But she did perform oral sex on him before giving him her telephone number and leaving.At a later date, she was driven to Brand\u2019s house, where they had consensual sex before he anally raped her in an attack that left her bleeding for a few days, the court heard.The prosecutor said the woman could not speak through the pain. \u201cShe asked him to stop, at first quietly and then louder, a number of times, begging. He did not,\u201d Karmy-Jones said. He then ordered her to \u201cclean up the mess you have made\u201d.Brand texted the woman the following year after seeing each other in a chance encounter in Scotland. She said she messaged Brand: \u201cWhy are you even messaging me?\u201d and he replied: \u201cBecause you\u2019re dirty, and I wanna push you further.\u201dThe court heard that she had replied: \u201cI think you pushed me far enough \u2013 you treated me like an animal\u201d, and she said Brand had replied: \u201cI\u2019m sorry.\u201dThe woman, the prosecutor said, spent years blaming herself for what had happened, and became extremely anxious and unwell. The final alleged victim was working at Channel 4 in 2009 when she alleges that Brand sexually assaulted her by placing his head in her groin area. She told her manager about the attack but she felt her complaint was not taken seriously.Karmy-Jones said that Brand had given prepared statements in police interviews, denying all the allegations. He said he had never engaged in nonconsensual sexual activity, and suggested accounts may have been reinvented or imagined after a documentary about his alleged sexual misconduct.Brand\u2019s wife, Laura Gallacher, sat through the evidence on Wednesday morning. Earlier, the pair arrived at court to a crowd of reporters and photographers. \u201cI feel blessed,\u201d Brand told a journalist. \u201cI feel of course concerned but hopeful that this process will lead to good outcomes for everybody involved. That\u2019s my prayer.\u201dThe trial before judge Mr Justice Bennathan continues."
