(WTVA) – A survivor of human trafficking shared her story and a message with others. Human trafficking affects millions of people worldwide. Tuesday, Heidi Evensen spoke at the Columbus Rotary Club’s weekly meeting at the Lion Hills Country Club. Exploited and abused as a child, she said her experiences now drive her to help others. “I didn’t want to just have survived what I went through,” Evenson said. ”I think what makes me an overcomer and thrive in this world is to not just have survived it, and helping the ones who are in the fire.” The National Human Trafficking Hotline identified 300 victims in Mississippi in 2024. Advocates said warning signs can include fear, isolation, unexplained injuries, or someone else controlling a person’s actions. Amy Bogue, the president of Allegro Family Clinic, helped bring Evenson to speak. She said education is an important step in helping protect children. “We need a lot more help identifying and helping kids,” Bogue said. ”A lot of people feel shamed for what’s happened. And they just need an adult to notice that something’s not right and to care. You can’t know what to look for unless you’re educated, so it all starts with education.” Both women said recognizing the warning signs can help connect victims with support. If human trafficking is suspected, call the National Human Trafficking hotline at 1-888-373-7888 or text 233733. Copyright 2026 WTVA. All rights reserved.
