                    "By Alex Lefkowitz\n\n\n\nSOFIA, Oct 13 (Reuters)\u00a0\u2013\u00a0Eleven sailors were missing at sea on Tuesday from a ship sunk by a drone attack off the coast of Bulgaria, possibly the second deadly sinking of a cargo vessel in the area in a week, prompting Bulgaria to summon Russia\u2019s ambassador.\n\n\n\nTwo cargo ships were hit by drones overnight and one was sunk, Bulgarian officials said. Bulgaria stopped short of explicitly accusing Russia of carrying out the attacks but Prime Minister Rumen Radev said their outcome \u201cbenefits the Russian Federation.\u201d\n\n\n\nThere was no immediate comment from Moscow on the incidents.\n\n\n\n\u201cThis is absolutely unacceptable \u2014 another attack in the immediate vicinity of Bulgarian territorial waters,\u201d Radev said in a televised address.\n\n\n\nThe attacks were also condemned by Ukraine and the EU.\n\n\n\n\u201cThe Black Sea has become another front of escalation of the Russian war in Ukraine,\u201d European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said on X. \u201cThose responsible should be held accountable.\u201d\u00a0\n\n\n\nUkraine\u2019s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said on X on Tuesday that the strike \u201conce again demonstrates Moscow\u2019s deliberate disregard for civilian lives.\u201d\u00a0\n\n\n\n\u201cThe Black Sea is a lifeline for global food security. Russia is attacking it to weaponise hunger and hold the world hostage,\u201d he said.\n\n\n\nSpeaking with von der Leyen and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte by telephone on Tuesday, Radev urged their support\u00a0to bolster his country\u2019s maritime and airspace surveillance, the Bulgarian government said in a statement.\n\n\n\nNATO would continue to adjust its military presence on its eastern flank \u201cas needed,\u201d Rutte said.\n\n\n\nDefense Minister Dimitar Stoyanov spoke on the phone with his counterparts from Romania and Turkey and discussed security in the Black Sea region.\u00a0\n\n\n\nBLACK SEA\u00a0SHIPPING\u00a0DRAWN INTO WAR\n\n\n\nBulgarian officials said five crew members had been rescued but 11 were still listed as missing from the ship which sank off the coast of the village of Krapets, near the Romanian border. President Iliana Iotova identified the vessel as the Guinea-Bissau-flagged cargo ship HS Dignity and said a search and rescue operation was ongoing.\n\n\n\nAnother ship, the Chelsea-3 sailing under a Maltese flag, was also hit by three drones overnight, Bulgarian officials said. All crew from that ship \u2014 seven Ukrainians and eight Azerbaijanis \u2014 were rescued and none seriously injured.\n\n\n\nThe Chelsea-3 called at the Romanian\u00a0port\u00a0of Tulcea on October 3 before sailing towards the Bulgarian coast, according to ship tracking data on LSEG and MarineTraffic. The vessel was showing it was at 72% of its full load, indicating it had cargo onboard.\n\n\n\nThe sunken HS Dignity, which was also part-loaded, was sailing to the Romanian\u00a0port\u00a0of Braila and had previously called at the Algerian\u00a0port\u00a0of Mostaganem, ship tracking data showed.\u00a0\n\n\n\nA week ago\u00a0nine Syrian sailors and one Egyptian\u00a0were lost at sea from a ship that sank when hit by drones in Bulgaria\u2019s Black Sea exclusive economic zone.
