Koyari said the first missile flew about 220 kilometres (137 miles) and the second more than 910 kilometres (565 miles), following an “irregular” flight path and suggested it may have been a hypersonic weapon. South Korea’s presidential office said that Pyongyang’s repeated missile launches violate United Nations Security Council resolutions, urging an immediate stop. Monday’s launches add to heightened tensions on the Korean Peninsula, as both countries have been conducting weapons tests. Escalating tensions JCS spokesperson Jang Do-young said the latest missile launch appears to be a show of force, days after South Korea tested its own hypersonic weapon. On Thursday, South Korean President Lee Jae Myung oversaw the country’s first test-firing of a hypersonic missile, a rare public showcasing of a missile test by a South Korean president. Lee’s office said the hypersonic weapon, once fully developed, would enhance South Korea’s ability to strike key targets by surprise in the “Korean Peninsula theatre of operations”. Advertisement On October 3, North Korea (https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2026/10/2/north-korea-fires-ballistic-missile-towards-the-sea-south-korea-says) also tested a hypersonic intermediate-range missile designed to evade missile defences in South Korea and Japan. Last week, Seoul (https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2026/10/6/south-korea-considers-steps-to-force-north-korea-apology-for-dmz-mine-blast) demanded an apology after a landmine blast (https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2026/9/21/three-south-korean-officers-wounded-in-border-explosion) wounded three soldiers in the Demilitarized Zone between South and North Korea. A joint South Korean-UN investigation concluded that two landmines were planted by North Korean forces about a year ago. Pyongyang dismissed the claim and accused South Korea of provocation. Prior to the border mine blast, Seoul said it was conducting “preliminary coordination efforts” to (https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2026/9/18/south-korea-says-us-north-korea-talks-possible-rules-out-hormuz-deployment) facilitate dialogue between Pyongyang and Washington. Lee (https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2025/6/4/south-koreas-lee-promises-to-heal-wounds-in-first-address-as-president) pledged to reopen dialogue with North Korea in his first speech after taking office in 2025. North Korean leader Kim Jong Un continues to flaunt his nuclear weapons programme, while rejecting US and South Korean offers to resume stalled diplomacy. Talks between Kim and United States President Donald Trump (https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2019/3/1/trump-kim-summit-in-vietnam-all-the-latest-updates) abruptly ended in 2019. Kim Jong Un’s government continues to demand that Washington abandon its “hostile” policy towards Pyongyang and drop demands for North Korea’s denuclearisation as a condition for talks. aj-logo aj-logo aj-logo Advertisement About About Show more (https://www.aljazeera.com/about-us) About Us (https://www.aljazeera.com/code-of-ethics/) Code of Ethics (https://www.aljazeera.com/terms-and-conditions/) Terms and Conditions (https://www.aljazeera.com/eu-eea-regulatory/) EU/EEA Regulatory Notice (https://privacy.aljazeera.net/) Privacy Policy (https://privacy.aljazeera.net/cookie/) Cookie Policy (https://www.aljazeera.com/) Cookie Preferences (https://trust.aljazeera.net/accessibility/) Accessibility Statement (https://www.aljazeera.com/sitemap) Sitemap (https://careers.aljazeera.net/) Work for us Connect Connect Show more (https://network.aljazeera.net/en/contact?tid=6) Contact Us (https://www.aljazeera.com/user-accounts-help) User Accounts Help (https://commercial.aljazeera.net/) Advertise with us (https://www.aljazeera.com/stay-connected) Stay Connected (https://www.aljazeera.com/newsletters) Newsletters (https://sat.aljazeera.net/en) Channel Finder (https://www.aljazeera.com/schedule/) TV Schedule (https://www.aljazeera.com/podcasts/) Podcasts (https://webapps.aljazeera.net/aje/tips/) Submit a Tip (https://www.aljazeera.com/sponsored) Paid Partner Content Our Channels Our Channels Show more (http://aljazeera.net/) Al Jazeera Arabic (https://www.aljazeera.com/) Al Jazeera English (https://www.ajiunit.com/) Al Jazeera Investigative Unit (https://www.aljazeeramubasher.net/) Al Jazeera Mubasher (http://doc.aljazeera.net/) Al Jazeera Documentary (http://balkans.aljazeera.net/) Al Jazeera Balkans (http://ajplus.net/) AJ+ Our Network Our Network Show more (http://studies.aljazeera.net/en/) Al Jazeera Centre for Studies (http://training.aljazeera.net/) Al Jazeera Media Institute (http://learning.aljazeera.net/) Learn Arabic (http://liberties.aljazeera.com/en) Al Jazeera Centre for Public Liberties & Human Rights (http://forum.aljazeera.net/) Al Jazeera Forum (https://hotels.aljazeera.net/en) Al Jazeera Hotel Partners Follow Al Jazeera English: (https://www.facebook.com/aljazeera) facebook (https://twitter.com/ajenglish) twitter (https://www.youtube.com/aljazeeraenglish) youtube (https://www.instagram.com/aljazeeraenglish/?hl=en) instagram-colored-outline (https://www.aljazeera.com/xml/rss/all.xml) rss (https://bsky.app/profile/aljazeera.com) bluesky (https://www.tiktok.com/@aljazeeraenglish) tiktok-colored-outline (Al Jazeera Media Network logo) © 2026 Al Jazeera Media Network
