Sen. Jon Ossoff (D-GA) delivered quite the line in Thursday’s U.S. Senate debate against Rep. Mike Collins (R-GA).
Collins has been dogged by connections to white nationalists. In July, CNN reported that his son-in-law, David Alan Scheer II, made a series of posts that “promoted White nationalist ideology, spread antisemitic conspiracy theories, called for Muslims to be deported and shared an antisemitic infographic targeting Jews that he said his wife (Collins’ daughter) made.” In August, The Washington Post reported that a former intern for Collins, Preston Parra, posted KKK and Nazi imagery online. And on Wednesday, The Daily Beast revealed that two of Collins’ campaign organizers once had leadership roles in a white nationalist group founded by a former KKK leader.
During the debate, Ossoff ripped Collins for voting for President Donald Trump’s budget package, which cut Medicaid by an estimated $1 trillion over the next 10 years. As a result, more than 440 hospitals are at risk of reducing services or closing altogether. During his remarks, the senator added a throwaway line alluding to Collins’ more unsavory associations.
“That’s the problem, Mike,” Ossoff said. “It’s not just that you’ve hired half the Third Reich to staff your congressional office and you have promoted neo-Nazi content online. It’s that you’re robbing your constituents to subsidize your donors.”
Later, in his closing statement, Ossoff accused Collins of inheriting his congressional seat from his father, Mac Collins, as well as his wealth.
“Each time Mike has called himself a trucker tonight, you’d think he’s cruising down 85 behind the wheel. This is a congressman’s son, who inherited a seat in Congress, who now runs his daddy’s trucking company, who voted seven times for the war in Iran, who voted for the tariffs, who voted to cut your healthcare,” Ossoff said. “His office has been in cahoots with some of the most notorious white supremacists in America.”
