TUPELO, Miss. (WTVA) — A local organization is making sure area children have enough to eat while they’re away from the classroom for Fall Break.
Junior Auxiliary volunteers in Tupelo spent the morning packing food bags for children facing food insecurity — and this week, they’re packing twice as many.
The effort is part of Junior Auxiliary’s Silent Servings program, which provides nutritious, ready-to-eat and easy-to-prepare foods for children to take home.
With students out of school next week, volunteers are doubling their efforts to make sure no child goes hungry while school meals are on pause.
“Kids that are identified by their school counselors may need a little extra help with their diets at home. So, that’s where we are able to step in and provide food for those kids. School is out next week, so they will not be able to come to school and get their bags,” Silent Servings chair Natalie Ellis explained.
Last school year, Junior Auxiliary volunteers packed more than 9,000 food bags for area children.
And this week, they’re adding even more bags to help families get through Fall Break.
