WINONA, Miss. (WLBT) - Curtis Flowers, the Mississippi man who spent more than 22 years in prison after being wrongfully convicted of four murders, has died. He was 56.

Flowers was found dead Wednesday, according to Montgomery County Coroner Allan Pratt. No further details have been released.

Flowers was prosecuted six times for the 1996 murders of four people at Tardy Furniture in Winona. His convictions were repeatedly overturned, and the U.S. Supreme Court overturned his final convictions in 2019.

He was released from prison later that year. In 2020, Mississippi Attorney General Lynn Fitch announced the state would not pursue another trial and dropped the charges against Flowers.

His case received national attention through the In the Dark podcast, which examined his prosecution and the circumstances surrounding the convictions.

In 2021, Flowers was awarded $500,000 under Mississippi’s wrongful-incarceration law. A court order required the State of Mississippi to pay that compensation in annual installments of $50,000 over 10 years.
