                    "Bobby Watkins sits behind the counter on Wednesday at his U-Haul Store on highway 45. Watkins has filled his U-Haul store with memorabilia from the TV show \u201cGunsmoke.\u201d Paloma Green/Dispatch Staff\t\n\t\t\tBobby Watkins loves watching the look on people\u2019s faces as they step into his U-Haul store off Highway 45. Walking through the front door, no one would blame you if you thought you had accidentally walked into a \u201cGunsmoke\u201d museum instead.\nThe store is lined with cases full of old scripts, pictures of guest stars and other memorabilia that belonged to James Arness, who played Marshal Matt Dillon on the show.\nWatkins grew up watching \u201cGunsmoke\u201d with his father, Charlie Watkins Sr., who he considers to be \u201cthe No. 1 \u2018Gunsmoke\u2019 fan.\u201d\n\u201cI\u2019m 64, and I can remember when I was 10 years old, (my grandfather and father) made me watch \u2018Gunsmoke,\u2019\u201d Bobby said. \u201cNow I watch \u2018Gunsmoke\u2019 because I want to. \u2026 Of course you couldn\u2019t talk when \u2018Gunsmoke\u2019 was on. They\u2019d throw whatever was close to them at you if you (talked) during \u2018Gunsmoke.\u2019\u201d\nSo about five years ago when Bobby saw listings on eBay for photographs of \u201cGunsmoke\u201d guest stars Arness had collected over the years, he jumped at the opportunity to buy them all. He bought so many, he got the attention of Janet Surtees, Arness\u2019 widow.\n\u201cOnce I got so many of them that\u2019s when she called and said \u2018What (are) you doing with this?\u2019\u201d Watkins said. \u201cSo when I actually showed her pictures of it, that\u2019s when she told me, \u2018Look I have a whole house full of his stuff. \u2026 It (doesn\u2019t) have a huge value, but it\u2019s his stuff.\u2019 And I said, \u2018That\u2019s what I really wanted, his personal stuff.\u2019 And that\u2019s what we did, we got to be friends.\u201d\nBobby told Surtees about how his dad used to copy Dillon\u2019s signature stance from the show in photos when he worked as a police officer. She asked to see photos, and in return, Surtees sent Charlie a signed book with an inscription that said, \u201cYou have a great Matt Dillon stance, just like my Husband James Arness.\u201d\nShe continued to gift \u201cGunsmoke\u201d memorabilia to Charlie until he passed away three years ago.\nWhen Bobby told Surtees that Charlie had passed, she asked for one more photo of him doing the Matt Dillon stance. Two weeks later, Bobby received a mug from her in the mail with a picture of Charlie on one side and Arness on the other, in the middle it reads \u201cForever doin\u2019 the stance.\u201d\n\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\tBobby Watkins holds a mug on Wednesday that has a picture of his father and James Arness as Matt Dillon both doing the character\u2019s signature stance, in the middle it says \u201cForever doin\u2019 the stance.\u201d Watkins was sent the mug by James Arness\u2019 widow, Janet Surtees, after Watkins\u2019 father passed away in 2023. Paloma Green/Dispatch Staff\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\n\n\u201cWith all the millions of people that\u2019s sending her stuff and asking her stuff, I thought for her to take time to do all that was pretty cool,\u201d Bobby said of the mug.\nCharlie\u2019s mug and signed book now sit next to one another in a special case at the front of the store.\nAlways a collector\nBobby only started collecting \u201cGunsmoke\u201d memorabilia five years ago, but for as long as Tina Watkins, his wife of 42 years, has known him, he has loved collecting things. It is a passion he shares with his son, Ryan Watkins.\n\u201cWe got married (in) \u201884 and ever since, he\u2019s always collecting,\u201d Tina said. \u201c\u2026 (Ryan and Bobby) like to sit there, and they\u2019ll research things. The next thing you know \u2026 they\u2019re buying this and getting that. But it gives them something to do. \u2026 Sometimes he\u2019s real quiet, and you know then, he just bought something.\u201d\nWhile Tina said the family\u2019s driveway is overflowing with Bobby\u2019s car collection, she does not let him store his collections in the house. Bobby instead opts to keep his collections at his U-Haul store to share his collection with other people.\nToday, the store is covered with \u201cGunsmoke\u201d memorabilia, but before that, Bobby started a vintage U-Haul collection.\nThe back two walls of his store, tucked in beside the \u201cGunsmoke\u201d memorabilia, are lined with discontinued U-Haul offerings from the 1980s, like a tricycle or a pram the company used to offer for rent. There are also models of old trucks that customers\u2019 children sometimes try to play with, Tina said.\nBobby has run the U-Haul store for so long that some of the kids who once played with the old truck have returned to pick up a truck for moving in and out of college. He said he loves being a part of those exciting moments in people\u2019s lives.\nJust as you\u2019re leaving the U-Haul store, you\u2019ll notice a hanging collection of patches left behind for Bobby by members of the Air Force who came to Columbus for training.\n\u201cI\u2019m the first one they see (when they arrive),\u201d Bobby said. \u201cAnd then I am the last one they see when they leave. And the greatest part of all is when they leave they say good-bye to me and Mississippi \u2026and a few years later, about three years later, they come back as an instructor pilot. So they walk in the door and they\u2019ll remember me and they\u2019ll come in and say, \u2018I\u2019ll never say never again.
