It comes less than 30 days before the midterms, where Paxton is facing an uphill battle against Democrat James Talarico in the deep-red Lone Star State.\n\u201cI\u2019ve never been in a race where I felt less control over the campaign and, like, what issues are going to matter because it\u2019s all coming \u2014 you know \u2014 from D.C.,\u201d Paxton says in the clip.\nThe audio was captured by an attendee who admitted to the outlet that he does not support Paxton.\n\u201cI don\u2019t have ability to change anything,\u201d Paxton went on. \u201cSo I have to live with whatever I\u2019ve got. So it is a challenge.\u201d\nWhile Politico notes via an anonymous source that Trump or the White House was mentioned by name as those controlling his campaign, \u201ceverybody knew what he was talking about.\u201d\nThe Politico report comes days after Paxton was heard saying President Donald Trump\u2019s Texas midterm convention hurt him more than it helped in another leaked clip obtained from the same event by The New York Times.\n\u201cDo you feel like he\u2019s a little bit of a drag?\u201d Paxton is asked.\n\u201cSo to be honest with you, the numbers \u2014 when we did that convention \u2014 it dropped our numbers,\u201d Paxton replied. \u201cEverybody\u2019s numbers dropped. Right now, yeah, not good.\u201d\nSimilarly to Politico, an anonymous attendee of the fundraiser opposed to Paxton\u2019s candidacy gave The Times the audio.\nPaxton\u00a0emerged\u00a0as the Republican candidate in May after\u00a0securing an endorsement from Trump, who snubbed incumbent John Cornyn.\nTrump intervened in the race over the objections of many in the party establishment \u2014 who worried Paxton\u2019s various corruption and infidelity scandals would plague him in the general election and put a safe Senate seat in play.\nAnd those fears seem to be playing out.
