SHANNON, Miss. (WTVA) – A woods fire was brought under control before it caused property damage.

A handful of fire departments responded to the fire in Lee County near the intersection of Jones Drive and Mallard Street in Shannon.

Fire crews from Verona, Nettleton, Okolona, and Palmetto responded and sprayed the woods to prevent flames from reappearing.

The fire came close to two houses in the area.

Tracy Washington said he called 911 and said he was not sure how the fire started, but said it spread quickly.

Washington said the quick response from the local fire agencies kept the fire from spreading further and causing property damage.

Many of the firefighters at the scene are volunteers.
