What she is really doing is mocking you. She doesn\u2019t want voters to be able to ask her one question.\u201d\nOn Tuesday, Colom challenged Hyde-Smith to three debates before Election Day. After two days, the challenge remained unanswered, prompting Thursday\u2019s press conference downtown.\nBut Jake Monssen, Hyde-Smith\u2019s campaign manager, told The Dispatch on Thursday afternoon the debate requests will remain unanswered because the senator does not feel it is necessary.\n\u201cLosing candidates always want a debate about debates,\u201d Jake Monssen, Hyde-Smith\u2019s campaign manager, wrote in a statement to The Dispatch. \u201cScott Colom wants one because he needs one. He also said he does not support biological boys playing girls\u2019 sports.\nYet, throughout the campaign season, Hyde-Smith has brought up Colom\u2019s support for gender-affirming care, even citing it as a reason for blocking Colom\u2019s nomination to be a federal judge in 2023.\n\u201cShe says I\u2019m out of touch, and that\u2019s why she doesn\u2019t want to debate,\u201d Colom said at the press conference. \u201cBut here\u2019s the truth. There is nothing out of touch with wanting to raise the minimum wage.\u201d\nColom believes Mississippi voters deserve a debate to hear from the candidates vying for their vote in the November election.\nHe pushed for the first two debates to be hosted in Jackson by WLBT and WJTV, respectively.
