COLUMBUS, Miss. (WTVA) – A new system is rolling out for people who live alone.

The Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office has launched ConfirmOk.

Getting involved with the program is as simple as using a smartphone to download the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office app and signing up.

Alternatively, someone can call the sheriff’s office directly to sign up at 662-328-6788.

The user will then receive daily welfare calls. The call, voiced by the sheriff, will ask the user to press one.

If the user doesn’t press one, the system will call an emergency contact.

If the emergency contact does not answer, it will then dispatch a deputy to check on the user.

“In the past, we’ve answered calls where we’ve found elderly people that are living by themselves, and nobody has checked on them for several days,” said Sheriff Eddie Hawkins. “Can’t get to a phone, can’t call for help. This is just some reassurance.”

There is no cost for the program for those who want to be in it.

“This is just another way that we want to give back to our communities,” Hawkins said.

The service officially launches Tuesday, Sept. 29.
