CRAWFORD, Miss. (WTVA) — Cattle prices are still holding at high levels, even though they have come down from the highs seen this spring.
For cattle producers, the price they get when they sell can play a big role in how their operation does.
“A good 500 pound steer- roughly between $1,800 to $2,200 right now, that’s where the market is going,” said Eric McCarter, a cattleman.
Diesel helps power the day-to-day work on a cattle operation, from farm equipment to trucks used to move livestock and supplies.
Changes in fuel costs can add another expense for producers to consider.
“It takes a lot, so you could look at easy… that farmer probably spending a minimum $2,500 a day just in fuel,” said Lamarcus Phillips, a cattleman and ag mechanic.
For cattlemen, it comes down to more than just the price of their cattle. It’s also about what it costs to keep the operation going.
