STARKVILLE, Miss. (WTVA) — Mississippi State is trying to set a new cowbell record this weekend. Mississippi State will reclaim the world record for the most cowbells rung at the same time.
A generational tradition
For generations of Mississippi State fans, the cowbell has been more than a gameday noise. Eugenia Cousineaux-Stone, an MSU alum, said the tradition dates back decades.
“Back in the day, in the 80s, we were called the Cow College. So because we had the cowbells,” Cousineaux-Stone said.
“Just very regular back in the day. Like just a regular old cowbell, like off a cow and paint it up and whatnot,” Cousineaux-Stone said.
Those simple bells have changed.
“And now they’ve got all sorts of designs. They’re stainless. I mean, they’re engraved. They’re everything. It’s so much fun,” Cousineaux-Stone said.
Marc Anthony, owner of Bullybell, said one tradition remains unchanged.
“Well, you know, the tradition is you can’t buy your first bell. It has to be gifted to you,” Anthony said.
Passing the tradition on
A tradition that started with one generation is being passed to the next.
“It’s fun to drive around the campus and see all the people. They’re so young compared to us now, you know, we’re kind of old farts, but it is fun,” Cousineaux-Stone said.
“All the kids now grow up with the cowbells and be like, here we are, we’re MSU and it’s fun. It’s just great,” Cousineaux-Stone said.
This week, that generational tradition could make history. Mississippi State will reclaim the world record for the most cowbells rung at the same time.
“So we’re all going to have our cowbells and ring everything up,” Cousineaux-Stone said.
Anthony said demand for cowbells has surged ahead of the attempt.
“It’s been a frenzy for them. We can’t keep up with it. People calling wanting them. We shipped a bunch, people coming in the store wanting them. It’s been busy,” Anthony said.
