Eight service members assigned to the USS Abraham Lincoln carrier strike group attempted suicide during its extended deployment for operations against Iran, Acting Navy Secretary Hung Cao said in a letter to Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand.

The figure covers personnel across the strike group, including the aircraft carrier, its air wing and accompanying ships. It does not mean all eight attempts took place aboard the Lincoln. Cao said none of the attempts resulted in a death.

The letter describes two incidents aboard the carrier. In August, a sailor who went overboard was rescued and received medical care. In March, shipmates stopped another sailor from going overboard, and that sailor also received treatment.

The disclosure follows concerns raised by crew members’ families about the length of the deployment and conditions at sea. Cao said the carrier had mental health professionals and chaplains available to its personnel.
