Mikie Sherrill\u2019s handpicked No. 2 she once lauded as a \u201cvoice for the voiceless\u201d \u2014 has resigned under the weight of a growing sexual harassment scandal that led to his boss calling for his ouster.\n\n\n\nThe first-term governor said Caldwell submitted his resignation Friday afternoon, a day after she publicly called on him to step down after an investigation substantiated claims of sexual harassment and \u201cserious repeated violations of state policy, including ethical lapses.\u201d\n\n\n\nNew Jersey Lt. Gov. Dale Caldwell stepped down as the state\u2019s second in command under the growing weight of a sprawling sexual harassment scandal. Kyle Mazza/Shutterstock\n\n\n\nCaldwell, the former president of Centenary University, was accused of making sexual comments to an aide and using his position to try to score a promotion for his girlfriend.\n\n\n\nBut in a defiant interview, the embattled pol denied he was resigning over his scandalous behavior.\n\n\n\n\u201cI\u2019m not resigning because of the report,\u201d Caldwell told the New York Times. \u201cIt\u2019s false. I\u2019m resigning because I don\u2019t want to be a distraction to the administration.\u201d\n\n\n\t\n\n\n\n\u201cI\u2019m supportive of the Sherrill administration,\u201d he added. \u201cI want her to be as successful as possible.\u201d\n\n\n\nCaldwell labeled the 61-page bombshell report as \u201cspecious\u201d and \u201cpoorly done\u201d \u2014 and doubled-down on the fact he is not resigning because of \u201cthat ridiculous report,\u201d in an interview with Fox News Friday.\n\n\n\n\u201cI just think it was poorly done. It was poorly done. I mean, I just think that there are ways that they could have done better. And, I was just disappointed in the legal\u2026work in that,\u201d Caldwell said of the ethics report.\n\n\n\nThe now-former lieutenant governor encouraged \u201ceveryone to read the report\u201d that was released Thursday evening and said he is \u201cglad\u201d it was out.\n\n\n\n\u201cThere\u2019s certain accusations in there when you start to read the report, that you realize, \u2018wait, that\u2019s not an accusation,\u2019\u201d the former pol told the network, without referencing anything specific.\n\n\n\n\u201cThis is one of those things that happens,\u201d Caldwell said, adding that he\u2019s \u201cgoing to continue to work as a private citizen. I\u2019m freed up to do a lot more things.\u201d\n\n\n\n\u201cSo I\u2019m looking forward to supporting the administration and really supporting folks.\u201d\n\n\n\nSherrill formally called for Caldwell\u2019s resignation in a statement Thursday night, the same day an explosive 61-page ethics report detailing his creepy conduct was released, and gave him 24 hours to step down.\n\n\n\n\u201cI hold everyone in my Administration to the highest ethical standard. We all have a duty to follow our state ethics and harassment policy and our Code of Conduct. Anyone who violates these will be held accountable.\u201d\n\n\n\nCaldwell, 66, blamed race as a driving force behind the investigation, which was sparked by an anonymous complaint in May.\n\n\n\n\u201cUnfortunately, in this current political environment, false accusations, especially against people of color, seem to be commonplace,\u201d he said at the time.\n\n\n\nCaldwell\u2019s shocking fall from grace stands in stark contrast to the high praise Sherrill heaped upon him during her run for governor.\n\n\n\nNew Jersey Gov. Getty Images\n\n\n\nIn July 2025, Sherrill called him a \u201cvoice for the voiceless,\u201d and someone who is \u201ccommitted to New Jersey\u201d when she tapped him to be her running mate against Republican Jack Ciattarelli.\n\n\n\n\u201cI\u2019m proud to select Dale Caldwell as my Lieutenant Governor running mate because we share a commitment to public service and challenging the status quo,\u201d Sherrill said at the time, lauding him for marching in Selma, Ala. with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.\n\n\n\nThe voluminous report, based on a probe led by former New Jersey Attorney General Christopher Porrino, highlights egregious examples of Caldwell abusing his position including scoring pricey tickets for romantic conquests, securing his girlfriend a cushy state promotion and tasking his aides with finding him a \u201cfirst lady.\u201d\n\n\n\nThe disgraced lieutenant governor brought one or more guests to seven ticketed events without paying for them between Feb. 19 and May 23 \u2014 including at the State Opera of New Jersey and a Rowan University Rosa Parks Scholarship Luncheon. Tickets ranged from $65 to $300, the report said.\n\n\n\nCaldwell has denied some of the allegations through his lawyer, Thomas Calcagni. Bloomberg via Getty Images\n\n\n\n\nOne of the worst accusations featured in the report occurred in April, when Caldwell, 66, hit on a staffer\u2019s much-younger friend at an official event, then threw a tantrum in the back of his state vehicle after his advances were rejected, allegedly telling the aide, \u201cyou young women are looking for young sperm.\u201d\n\n\n\nCaldwell\u2019s attorney, Thomas Calcagni, denied that his client made the stomach-churning comment.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCaldwell, a divorced Methodist pastor, allegedly tasked a staffer with finding him a \u201cfirst lady,\u201d and when she said no, he became \u201cpushy\u201d on the subject, the report said.\n\n\n\nSherrill was barred from firing Caldwell \u2014 only the state Legislature can remove lieutenant governors through impeachment."
