Mikie Sherrill’s handpicked No. 2 she once lauded as a “voice for the voiceless” — has resigned under the weight of a (https://nypost.com/2026/09/04/us-news/nj-lt-gov-dale-caldwell-under-investigation-for-alleged-inappropriate-behavior-toward-women-report/) growing sexual harassment scandal that led to his boss calling for his ouster. The first-term governor said Caldwell submitted his resignation Friday afternoon, a day after she publicly called on him to step down after an investigation substantiated claims of sexual harassment and “serious repeated violations of state policy, including ethical lapses.” (Open a slideshow of all 3 article images.) Dale Caldwell stepped down as the state’s second in command under the growing weight of a sprawling sexual harassment scandal. Kyle Mazza/Shutterstock Caldwell, the former president of Centenary University, was accused of making sexual comments to an aide and using his position to try to score a promotion for his girlfriend. But in a defiant interview, the embattled pol denied he was resigning over his scandalous behavior. “I’m not resigning because of the report,” Caldwell (https://www.nytimes.com/2026/09/25/nyregion/new-jersey-lieutenant-governor-resigns-dale-caldwell.html) told the New York Times . “It’s false. I’m resigning because I don’t want to be a distraction to the administration.” Explore More (https://nypost.com/2026/09/25/us-news/noreaster-threatens-nyc-east-coast-live-updates-on-the-storm-photos-reactions/) () (https://nypost.com/2026/09/25/us-news/noreaster-threatens-nyc-east-coast-live-updates-on-the-storm-photos-reactions/) Stunning sunset lights up NYC skyline ahead of nor’easter (https://nypost.com/2026/09/24/us-news/backyard-bear-attack-leaves-couple-injured-hero-dog-dead/) () (https://nypost.com/2026/09/24/us-news/backyard-bear-attack-leaves-couple-injured-hero-dog-dead/) California couple brutally mauled by bear before their tiny French Bulldog Cassie dies saving them (https://nypost.com/2026/09/25/us-news/frat-leaders-arrested-after-cops-found-dozens-of-nearly-naked-teens-in-dingy-basement-in-suspected-hazing-incident/) () (https://nypost.com/2026/09/25/us-news/frat-leaders-arrested-after-cops-found-dozens-of-nearly-naked-teens-in-dingy-basement-in-suspected-hazing-incident/) Frat leaders arrested after cops found dozens of nearly-naked teens in dingy basement in suspected hazing incident “I’m supportive of the Sherrill administration,” he added. “I want her to be as successful as possible.” Caldwell labeled the 61-page bombshell report as “specious” and “poorly done” — and doubled-down on the fact he is not resigning because of “that ridiculous report,” in an interview with(https://www.foxnews.com/politics/former-dem-lt-gov-reveals-why-he-resigned-after-sexual-harassment-probe-rocked-state) Fox News Friday. “I just think it was poorly done. It was poorly done. I mean, I just think that there are ways that they could have done better. And, I was just disappointed in the legal…work in that,” Caldwell said of the ethics report. The now-former lieutenant governor encouraged “everyone to read the report” that was released Thursday evening and said he is “glad” it was out. “There’s certain accusations in there when you start to read the report, that you realize, ‘wait, that’s not an accusation,’” the former pol told the network, without referencing anything specific. “This is one of those things that happens,” Caldwell said, adding that he’s “going to continue to work as a private citizen. I’m freed up to do a lot more things.” “So I’m looking forward to supporting the administration and really supporting folks.” Sherrill formally (https://nypost.com/2026/09/24/us-news/nj-gov-sherrill-demands-lt-gov-dale-caldwells-resignation-after-sex-harrassment-probe/) called for Caldwell’s resignation in a statement Thursday night, the same day an explosive 61-page ethics report detailing his creepy conduct was released, and gave him 24 hours to step down. “I hold everyone in my Administration to the highest ethical standard. We all have a duty to follow our state ethics and harassment policy and our Code of Conduct. Anyone who violates these will be held accountable.” Caldwell, 66, blamed race as a driving force behind the investigation, which was sparked by an anonymous complaint in May. “Unfortunately, in this current political environment, false accusations, especially against people of color, seem to be commonplace,” he said at the time. Caldwell’s shocking fall from grace stands in stark contrast to the high praise Sherrill heaped upon him during her run for governor. (Open a slideshow of all 3 article images.) (Mikie Sherrill and Dale Caldwell celebrate their election victory with arms raised in front of an American flag.) 3 New Jersey Gov. Mikie Sherrill touted Caldwell as a “voice for the voiceless” during her 2025 run for office. Getty Images In July 2025, Sherrill called him a “voice for the voiceless,” and someone who is “committed to New Jersey” when she tapped him to be her running mate against Republican Jack Ciattarelli. “I’m proud to select Dale Caldwell as my Lieutenant Governor running mate because we share a commitment to public service and challenging the status quo,” Sherrill said at the time, lauding him for marching in Selma, Ala. with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The voluminous report, based on a probe led by former New Jersey Attorney General Christopher Porrino, highlights egregious examples of Caldwell abusing his position including scoring pricey tickets for romantic conquests, securing his girlfriend a cushy state promotion and tasking his aides with finding him a “first lady.” The disgraced lieutenant governor brought one or more guests to seven ticketed events without paying for them between Feb. 19 and May 23 — including at the State Opera of New Jersey and a Rowan University Rosa Parks Scholarship Luncheon. Tickets ranged from $65 to $300, the report said. (Open a slideshow of all 3 article images.) (Dale Caldwell speaking after being sworn-in as Lieutenant Governor for New Jersey.) 3 Caldwell has denied some of the allegations through his lawyer, Thomas Calcagni. Bloomberg via Getty Images One of the worst accusations featured in the report occurred in April, when Caldwell, 66, hit on a staffer’s much-younger friend at an official event, then threw a tantrum in the back of his state vehicle after his advances were rejected, allegedly telling the aide, “you young women are looking for young sperm.” Caldwell’s attorney, Thomas Calcagni, denied that his client made the stomach-churning comment. Caldwell, a divorced Methodist pastor, allegedly tasked a staffer with finding him a “first lady,” and when she said no, he became “pushy” on the subject, the report said. Sherrill was barred from firing Caldwell — only the state Legislature can remove lieutenant governors through impeachment.
