Inside the general assembly, dozens of envoys from across the world (https://www.theguardian.com/world/video/2026/sep/24/un-delegates-walkout-netanyahu-speech) walked out as Netanyahu began his speech, where he assailed both enemies and allies that have crossed him in recent months, including Britain and France, which have recently moved to recognise the state of Palestine. And who’s accusing us? Among them are people in Britain and in France. For God’s sakes, they invented the term,” he told the assembly. Sarandon, whose movie hits also include The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Dead Man Walking and The Witches of Eastwick, is no stranger to protests over Israel’s war in Gaza. The US actor told journalists at the Venice film festival this month she was losing work because of her outspoken views. “I’ve still had movies taken away recently because there are agencies that are telling people not to hire me still. But that’s the power structure,” she said. “I think there has been a change in terms of the understanding of the situation and the general public, but there are still very strongly held positions within my industry that are held by Zionists and who have not relaxed their feelings towards me. “But I found my family, I found my people, and I’m OK,” she added. Einbinder has previously said the cost of not speaking up about Palestine is greater than losing her Hollywood career, citing industry backlash to actors such as Sarandon and (https://www.theguardian.com/film/2023/nov/23/melissa-barrera-fired-from-scream-vii-over-israel-hamas-posts-responds-silence-is-not-an-option) Melissa Barrera . “I think what they know is what I know, which is that the cost of not speaking is higher,” (https://www.theguardian.com/film/2026/may/14/hannah-einbinder-cost-of-not-speaking-out-on-palestine-is-greater-than-losing-career) she told Cannes film festival earlier this year. “There is a greater toll in not speaking and you’ve just got to have your priorities straight. I am under no impression that my small career could ever measure up in comparison to even one human life. It’s an obligation and I will always do it.” Agence France-Presse contributed to this report Explore more on these topics (https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/new-york) New York (https://www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio/hacks) Hacks (https://www.theguardian.com/film/susan-sarandon) Susan Sarandon (https://www.theguardian.com/world/benjamin-netanyahu) Benjamin Netanyahu (https://www.theguardian.com/world/protest) Protest (https://www.theguardian.com/world/israel) Israel (https://www.theguardian.com/world/unitednations) United Nations (https://www.theguardian.com/tone/news) news (mailto:?subject=Susan Sarandon and Hannah Einbinder arrested at anti-Netanyahu protest in New York&body=https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2026/sep/25/susan-sarandon-hannah-einbinder-arrested-anti-netanyahu-protest-new-york?CMP=share_btn_url) Share (https://syndication.theguardian.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.theguardian.com%2Fus-news%2F2026%2Fsep%2F25%2Fsusan-sarandon-hannah-einbinder-arrested-anti-netanyahu-protest-new-york&type=article&internalpagecode=us-news/2026/sep/25/susan-sarandon-hannah-einbinder-arrested-anti-netanyahu-protest-new-york) (Reuse this content) Reuse this content Most viewed Most viewed (https://www.theguardian.com/us-news) US news (https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/us-politics) US politics (https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/us-midterm-elections-2026) Midterms 2026 (https://www.theguardian.com/world) World (https://www.theguardian.com/environment/climate-crisis) Climate crisis (https://www.theguardian.com/world/middleeast) Middle East (https://www.theguardian.com/world/ukraine) Ukraine (https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/usimmigration) US immigration (https://www.theguardian.com/us/soccer) Soccer (https://www.theguardian.com/us/business) Business (https://www.theguardian.com/us/environment) Environment (https://www.theguardian.com/us/technology) Tech (https://www.theguardian.com/science) Science (https://www.theguardian.com/email-newsletters) Newsletters (https://www.theguardian.com/thefilter-us) The Filter (https://www.theguardian.com/us/wellness) Wellness (https://www.theguardian.com/) News (https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree) Opinion (https://www.theguardian.com/sport) Sport (https://www.theguardian.com/culture) Culture (https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle) Lifestyle Original reporting and incisive analysis, direct from the Guardian every morning (https://www.theguardian.com/info/2018/sep/17/guardian-us-morning-briefing-sign-up-to-stay-informed) Sign up for our email (https://www.theguardian.com/info/about-guardian-us) About us (https://manage.theguardian.com/help-centre) Help (https://www.theguardian.com/info/complaints-and-corrections) Complaints & corrections (https://www.theguardian.com/info/about-guardian-us/contact) Contact us (https://www.theguardian.com/tips) Tip us off (https://www.theguardian.com/securedrop) SecureDrop (https://www.theguardian.com/info/privacy) Privacy policy (https://www.theguardian.com/info/cookies) Cookie policy (https://uploads.guim.co.uk/2026/07/22/STL_Global_Tax_Strategy_for_the_year_to_31_March_2027.pdf) Tax strategy (https://www.theguardian.com/help/terms-of-service) Terms & conditions (https://www.theguardian.com/index/subjects/a) All topics (https://www.theguardian.com/index/contributors) All writers (https://www.theguardian.com/email-newsletters?INTCMP=DOTCOM_FOOTER_NEWSLETTER_US) Newsletters (https://theguardian.newspapers.com) Digital newspaper archive (https://bsky.app/profile/us.theguardian.com) Bluesky (https://www.facebook.com/theguardian) Facebook (https://www.instagram.com/guardian) Instagram (https://www.linkedin.com/company/theguardian) LinkedIn (https://www.threads.com/@guardian_us) Threads (https://www.tiktok.com/@guardian) TikTok (https://www.youtube.com/user/TheGuardian) YouTube (https://usadvertising.theguardian.com) Advertise with us (https://www.theguardian.com/guardian-labs-us) Guardian Labs (https://jobs.theguardian.com) Search jobs (https://workwithus.theguardian.com/) Work with us (https://www.theguardian.com/help/accessibility-help) Accessibility settings (susan-sarandon-hannah-einbinder-arrested-anti-netanyahu-protest-new-york.html#top) Back to top © 2026Guardian News & Media Limited or its affiliated companies.
