OXFORD, Miss. (WTVA) – Signs of mourning are visible at Ole Miss.

Black ribbons are hanging outside fraternity houses following the loss of two students on Monday.

The cause of death has not been confirmed at this time, nor have the identities of the students been released.

First responders were called to Stewart Hall on Monday around 1:30 p.m. for a possible overdose.

Oxford Police said that packaged kratom sold from a retail store was found during both investigations.

The two cases are not connected, investigators said.

Authorities asked the public to refrain from speculating as the investigations continue.

The Mississippi State Department of Health said that kratom can lead to opioid-like effects.

The product is banned in Lafayette County.
