TUPELO, Miss. (WTVA) – A new armored truck has been added to a police department’s fleet.

Tupelo’s Lenco Bearcat arrived Friday, marking the end of a three-year process to bring the idea to the city.

Chief John Quaka said he took the proposal to the mayor and city council in 2023.

The Bearcat cost $322,000, weighs 22,000 pounds, and can carry 10 people.

“When we get in gun fights, do you realize who gets hurt?” Quaka said. “It’s the subject of the warrant we were executing. This vehicle is going to save the lives of Tupelo police officers. But it’s also going to save lives of individuals we’re going to arrest. This is a win-win for the community.”

The truck has a casualty collection point inside, giving officers a protected place to help someone who may be injured.

Quaka said the truck will be used primarily by SWAT and tactical operations. However, it could also be used in other dangerous situations, such as one involving a hostage.

This is the department’s first armored vehicle. A facility was built to house it.
