OXFORD, Miss. (WMC) - An Ole Miss freshman is claiming that she was drugged at a bar in Oxford and that police only called her an Uber when bystanders called for help.
Her story has gained attention online and reached news outlets, but police issued a statement Thursday saying her story doesn’t reflect the entire truth based on evidence available.
Mary Harvey said she remembered nothing after watching Ole Miss Football secure its win over LSU at a bar in Oxford on Saturday night.
A witness later told her that he saw her fall down, bouncers pick her up, and toss her to the curb by herself.
Two women reportedly found Harvey and intervened, calling her mom and the police.
Harvey claims Oxford police officers “treated the situation like a joke,” put her in the back of an Uber by herself, and shipped her off to her dorm.
She says she was later told that the Uber driver had to recruit other students to help get her inside and into bed.
Harvey’s roommate told her that shortly after she was brought inside to safety, she emerged from the shower and discovered Harvey was no longer in bed.
Harvey says that her roommate eventually found her lying on the floor of the dorm’s hallway. She argues that university officials are not allowing her to review dorm security video, and “No one is doing anything to help me in any way.”
Harvey said in a social media post Tuesday that the experience has her worried about her safety in Oxford, especially in light of two student deaths Monday that have raised concerns about illicit drug use in the college town.
“I feel like this whole situation in Oxford needs to be addressed, and it’s absolutely insane that it’s not being spoken about,” Harvey wrote in her social media post.
Harvey also defended her story that she was drugged, and attested that she never took eyes off her drink that night, “but it somehow still happened.”
OPD says investigators have been reviewing the incident, including available body camera footage and city camera footage.
The department says the evidence does not support Harvey’s claims that officers abandoned her.
“When officers encountered the individual, she did not report that her drink had been tampered with, that she had been assaulted, or that a crime had occurred,” the department’s statement reads. “Officers asked if she was okay, and she indicated that she was and that she was intoxicated. Our officers remained with her throughout the encounter. They provided her with water, spoke with her, communicated with a family member, helped arrange transportation, and remained with her until that transportation arrived.”
OPD further states that officers never treated the situation as a joke and that Harvey was never placed alone in an empty vehicle.
“A middle-aged couple was also present, and the female rideshare driver was in communication with her family during the process,” the statement says.
Oxford police say the investigation into alleged drink-tampering didn’t begin until Monday when Harvey filed a police report.
OPD says the investigation remains ongoing and that officers will continue to follow evidence and provide the community with facts.
Police also addressed Harvey’s claim that girls “get drugged and raped every single weekend, or should I say every day, in Oxford, and no one is trying to do anything to prevent it.”
“At this time, we do not have evidence supporting claims that women are routinely being drugged in Oxford every weekend or every day,” police said. “However, every individual report will be taken seriously and investigated based upon the available evidence.”
