Marles said “very much everything that has occurred at the Australian end” would be reviewed, but claimed the technology parts were not “sensitive”, as (https://www.politico.com/news/2026/09/18/congress-f-35-china-investigation-01083647) first reported by Politico over the weekend . The parts, which were being transported by another unknown third party on behalf of manufacturer, Lockheed Martin, still remain unaccounted for months later following their unplanned diversion to (https://www.theguardian.com/world/hong-kong) Hong Kong . The last known location of the fighter jet components – in Hong Kong, a special administrative region of (https://www.theguardian.com/world/china) China – has sparked concern that some of the program’s technology secrets could have been exposed. “We are examining [Australia’s involvement], but the point I would make here is that we are confident about the way in which we’ve engaged with the program, and through the US’s prime contractor, Lockheed,” Marles said on Tuesday. “My understanding is that there is a sense of comfort, and we’re not talking about sensitive equipment here, or sensitive parts. Photograph: Dan Himbrechts/AAP “Ultimately, though, this is an issue which is going to be managed by the United States and by Lockheed in terms of what has occurred.” Politico reported sources said the “sensitive” shipment contained one of the jet’s canopies, which reportedly contains stealth technology. The US Department of War and F-35 Joint Program Office confirmed they were aware of the “shipment issue”. “We are actively working with US authorities and industry partners to retrieve these components, investigate the incident, and place safeguards to avoid a future occurrence,” the spokesperson said. While many details have not yet been revealed, Michael Shoebridge, a director for Strategic Analysis Australia who has worked in intelligence agencies, said there were two reasons why China, or another adversary, would want F-35 parts – to reverse engineer them, or to learn how to better exploit and attack them. Shoebridge added the shipment’s pitstop in Hong Kong was “such an unexpectedly stupid thing” for the manufacturer or Australia to do. “This is an act of incredible ineptitude and stupidity, and so it’s more the Chinese taking advantage of an incredible stroke of luck brought to them by the stupidity of the people involved,” he said. Last week, the US State Department announced that the Trump administration would continue with the sale of 48 F-35s to Saudi Arabia, (https://www.nytimes.com/2026/09/17/us/politics/trump-f35-jet-saudi-arabia.html) despite reported concerns from the US intelligence organisations that China could obtain some of the stealth technology. Australia was one of the early development partners in the F-35. The program spreads the development, supply, management and sustainment of the fighter jets across different countries. More than (https://www.defence.gov.au/news-events/releases/2023-10-30/australia-begins-providing-f-35-wheels-brakes-repair-work) 70 Australian companies have production and sustainment contracts with the F-35 program. In excess of 700 of the fighter jet’s “critical pieces” are (https://djsir.vic.gov.au/made-in-victoria/about/manufacturing-case-studies/from-moorabbin-to-space-how-the-f-35-is-taking-victoria-to-the-world) manufactured in Victoria alone , according to the state government. Australia also hosts a regional distribution hub for F-35 parts in New South Wales. Australian companies involved in the program’s supply chain have been awarded contracts valued at over $5.2bn, as of September 2025. Shoebridge said the missing shipment of parts could mean the whole multibillion-dollar fleet is vulnerable to adversaries. “They’re all now carrying the risk of whatever vulnerabilities this has brought to the aircraft,” he said. “So it’s not just a US-Australia issue. It’s every operator of the F-35 program [that] has an interest in understanding what happened and what was potentially exposed.” Explore more on these topics (https://www.theguardian.com/world/arms-trade) Arms trade (https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/australian-foreign-policy) Australian foreign policy (https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/us-military) US military (https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/australian-politics) Australian politics (https://www.theguardian.com/world/hong-kong) Hong Kong (https://www.theguardian.com/world/asia-pacific) Asia Pacific (https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/richard-marles--australian-politician-) Richard Marles (https://www.theguardian.com/tone/news) news (mailto:?subject=Australia investigating how F-35 fighter jet parts bound for US went missing in Hong Kong&body=https://www.theguardian.com/world/2026/sep/22/australia-investigating-how-f-35-fighter-jet-parts-bound-for-us-went-missing-in-hong-kong?CMP=share_btn_url) Share (https://syndication.theguardian.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.theguardian.com%2Fworld%2F2026%2Fsep%2F22%2Faustralia-investigating-how-f-35-fighter-jet-parts-bound-for-us-went-missing-in-hong-kong&type=article&internalpagecode=world/2026/sep/22/australia-investigating-how-f-35-fighter-jet-parts-bound-for-us-went-missing-in-hong-kong) (Reuse this content) Reuse this content Most viewed Most viewed (https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news) Australia (https://www.theguardian.com/world) World (https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/australian-politics) AU politics (https://www.theguardian.com/environment) Environment (https://www.theguardian.com/environment/climate-crisis) Climate crisis (https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/indigenous-australians) Indigenous Australia (https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/australian-immigration-and-asylum) Immigration (https://www.theguardian.com/media) Media (https://www.theguardian.com/business) Business (https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/health) Health (https://www.theguardian.com/science) Science (https://www.theguardian.com/technology) Tech (https://www.theguardian.com/au/podcasts) Podcasts (https://www.theguardian.com/email-newsletters) Newsletters (https://www.theguardian.com/) News (https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree) Opinion (https://www.theguardian.com/sport) Sport (https://www.theguardian.com/culture) Culture (https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle) Lifestyle Original reporting and incisive analysis, direct from the Guardian every morning (https://www.theguardian.com/info/2018/sep/17/guardian-us-morning-briefing-sign-up-to-stay-informed) Sign up for our email (https://www.theguardian.com/info/about-guardian-us) About us (https://manage.theguardian.com/help-centre) Help (https://www.theguardian.com/info/complaints-and-corrections) Complaints & corrections (https://www.theguardian.com/info/about-guardian-us/contact) Contact us (https://www.theguardian.com/tips) Tip us off (https://www.theguardian.com/securedrop) SecureDrop (https://www.theguardian.com/info/privacy) Privacy policy (https://www.theguardian.com/info/cookies) Cookie policy (https://uploads.guim.co.uk/2026/07/22/STL_Global_Tax_Strategy_for_the_year_to_31_March_2027.pdf) Tax strategy (https://www.theguardian.com/help/terms-of-service) Terms & conditions (https://www.theguardian.com/index/subjects/a) All topics (https://www.theguardian.com/index/contributors) All writers (https://www.theguardian.com/email-newsletters?INTCMP=DOTCOM_FOOTER_NEWSLETTER_US) Newsletters (https://theguardian.newspapers.com) Digital newspaper archive (https://bsky.app/profile/us.theguardian.com) Bluesky (https://www.facebook.com/theguardian) Facebook (https://www.instagram.com/guardian) Instagram (https://www.linkedin.com/company/theguardian) LinkedIn (https://www.threads.com/@guardian_us) Threads (https://www.tiktok.com/@guardian) TikTok (https://www.youtube.com/user/TheGuardian) YouTube (https://usadvertising.theguardian.com) Advertise with us (https://www.theguardian.com/guardian-labs-us) Guardian Labs (https://jobs.theguardian.com) Search jobs (https://workwithus.theguardian.com/) Work with us (https://www.theguardian.com/help/accessibility-help) Accessibility settings (australia-investigating-how-f-35-fighter-jet-parts-bound-for-us-went-missing-in-hong-kong.html#top) Back to top © 2026Guardian News & Media Limited or its affiliated companies.
