The Dar Hamar Emergency Room, a volunteer group, said in a statement on Sunday (local time) that rescue teams had recovered 10 bodies and 21 injured miners, with search operations continuing for those still trapped. The Sudanese Mineral Resources Company separately announced the mine collapse in the Oni area in a statement on Sunday, but did not provide an official toll of deaths or injuries. A miner who was at the site told Xinhua News Agency that the collapse occurred on Saturday as miners were working underground, after adjacent shafts caved in successively and buried workers under rock and soil. The miner, who requested anonymity, said miners at the site quickly tried to rescue those trapped using equipment available, while bulldozers were brought in to clear the rubble. He said difficult access to some parts of the site made it impossible to determine the final number of missing miners, adding that a number of the injured were transported to Port Sudan, about 300 km from the mine site. The accident came days after the collapse of the Al-Zaraa mine near Al-Nuhud in West Kordofan State, which killed dozens of miners. Artisanal mining is a major source of income for many Sudanese, producing about 80 per cent of the country's gold. The sector operates at more than 800 sites across northern and western Sudan, employing over 1.5 million miners. Gold is one of Sudan's major sources of foreign currency. According to official statistics, Sudan produced 70 tons of gold in 2025. Accidents are frequent at mining sites, where inadequate safety measures and deteriorating infrastructure increase the risks to miners. --IANS sd/ (https://ianslive.in/category/latest-news/1) LATEST NEWS (Roshibina Devi confirms her third successive Asian Games Wushu medal after QF win) (https://ianslive.in/roshibina-devi-confirms-her-third-successive-asian-games-wushu-medal-after-qf-win--20260922154745) Roshibina Devi confirms her third successive Asian Games Wushu medal after QF win September 22, 2026 (Harbhajan Mann shares how wife Harman stood by him through every challenge in heartfelt birthday wish) (https://ianslive.in/harbhajan-mann-shares-how-wife-harman-stood-by-him-through-every-challenge-in-heartfelt-birthday-wish--20260922153603) Harbhajan Mann shares how wife Harman stood by him through every challenge in heartfelt birthday wish September 22, 2026 (India prioritises autonomy, rule‑setting role before deeper US space ties: Report) (https://ianslive.in/india-prioritises-autonomy-rulesetting-role-before-deeper-us-space-ties-report--20260922153035) India prioritises autonomy, rule‑setting role before deeper US space ties: Report September 22, 2026 (Asian Games: PM Modi congratulates Suchika Tariyal, women’s cricket team on medal-winning performances) (https://ianslive.in/asian-games-pm-modi-congratulates-suchika-tariyal-womens-cricket-team-on-medal-winning-performances--20260922153156) Asian Games: PM Modi congratulates Suchika Tariyal, women’s cricket team on medal-winning performances September 22, 2026 ('China must allow Tibetans to decide their own future through referendum' (File image)) (https://ianslive.in/china-must-allow-tibetans-to-decide-their-own-future-through-referendum--20260922141759) 'China must allow Tibetans to decide their own future through referendum' September 22, 2026 (‘They were brilliant’: Iyer praises Japan after India survive two-run scare) (https://ianslive.in/they-were-brilliant-iyer-praises-japan-after-india-survive-two-run-scare--20260922152711) ‘They were brilliant’: Iyer praises Japan after India survive two-run scare September 22, 2026 (Asian Games: Jadumani Singh moves into pre-quarters after unanimous win over Nepal boxer) (https://ianslive.in/asian-games-jadumani-singh-moves-into-pre-quarters-after-unanimous-win-over-nepal-boxer--20260922152122) Asian Games: Jadumani Singh moves into pre-quarters after unanimous win over Nepal boxer September 22, 2026 (Sonali Kulkarni joins the cast of Neeru Sharma’s ‘Like Maa’) (https://ianslive.in/sonali-kulkarni-joins-the-cast-of-neeru-sharmas-like-maa--20260922151711) Sonali Kulkarni joins the cast of Neeru Sharma’s ‘Like Maa’ September 22, 2026 (Asian Games: India sweep Japan 3-0 to enter badminton men’s team SF, assure medal) (https://ianslive.in/asian-games-india-sweep-japan-3-0-to-enter-badminton-mens-team-sf-assure-medal--20260922151620) Asian Games: India sweep Japan 3-0 to enter badminton men’s team SF, assure medal September 22, 2026 (Only T20I: Japan captain Kendel Kadowaki proud despite narrow defeat to India) (https://ianslive.in/only-t20i-japan-captain-kendel-kadowaki-proud-despite-narrow-defeat-to-india--20260922150659) Only T20I: Japan captain Kendel Kadowaki proud despite narrow defeat to India September 22, 2026 Services (https://ianslive.in/category/national/1) National (https://ianslive.in/category/international/1) International (https://ianslive.in/category/business/1) Business (https://ianslive.in/category/entertainment/1) Entertainment (https://ianslive.in/category/science-tech/1) Science/Tech (https://ianslive.in/category/sports/1) Sports (https://ianslive.in/category/health-medicine/1) Health/Medicine Useful Links (https://ianslive.in/) Home (https://ianslive.in/aboutus) About Us (https://ianslive.in/contactus) Contact Us (https://ianslive.in/terms-of-use) Terms Of Use (https://ianslive.in/privacy-policy) Privacy Policy Contact Us IANS India Private Limited D5-6, Third Floor, Block D Sector-3, Noida, Uttar Pradesh Phone: +91-120-4822400, 4822415, 4822416 Email: dakul.s@ians.in, marketing@ians.in Copyright © 2025 IANS (Indo-Asian News Service) India Private Limited | Design and Development by IANS Software Services (10-artisanal-miners-killed-in-mine-collapse-in-sudan--20260921091836.html#)
