OXFORD, Miss. (WTVA) — Ahead of Saturday’s Magnolia Bowl, fans on both sides are trading trash talk in the skies.

Joshua Gregory is an Ole Miss fan and pilot who has used flight time to create messages tracked on flight trackers.

“I needed to take it to their home court for sure. And I wanted to make sure I had a message that was family-friendly, but also a little bit poke the bearish,” Gregory said.

One of Gregory’s most notable messages read “Come to the SIP.” He flew the message over Tiger Stadium in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

“‘Come to the SIP’ was Lane Kiffin’s thing when he was here. So it was kind of like a, you know, using it on him was a fun way and just saying, look, we’re ready for you all to come up here,” Gregory said.

Pilots are required to fly a certain number of hours to earn different types of licenses. Gregory used that time to fly the message.

“I’m talking to Baton Rouge and New Orleans air traffic control while I was there. After a few hours of watching me and realizing that I’m not being a little erratic in this pattern, they looked me up on FlightAware, and we had a fun little back and forth taunting in the air there towards the end of the flight,” Gregory said.

LSU fan responds

Gregory’s flight drew attention from both Ole Miss and LSU fans.

“When I saw what he did over Baton Rouge, I decided we couldn’t let that stand. Us Tiger fans, we’re not going to let that stand,” Matthew Becker said.

Becker flew into the Panola County Airport without knowing he would meet the man who inspired him to return the favor.

“I have never seen such a cosmic coincidence in my life. The odds of it being this airport. I didn’t know what airport he was based at. I’d never talked to him before,” Becker said.

Planning for this type of message can take a couple of hours, and the flight itself averages four to five hours.

Becker prepares for takeoff

“We are going to write just a nice, simple, old-fashioned LSU message, ‘Geaux Tigers’ smack-dab right over the middle of Oxford. I should clarify, Oxford is rather small and tiny in the middle of this gigantic ‘Geaux Tigers’” Becker said.

“I love that back and forth taunting,” Becker said.

Gregory said the exchange has drawn attention to the matchup.

“It is electric. I mean, Lane Kiffin, he’s stirred up a lot, but people are loving it. We’re loving it. LSU is in the news. We’re in the SEC. That’s what’s important. And what really matters is we’re coming to win,” Gregory said.

Gregory is welcoming fans to Oxford with a message: “Lane closure ahead.”

“I expect a very high-energy game. I expect both teams to put a lot of points on the board. And I expect my Rebels to come out and win it,” Gregory said.

Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m. CT on Saturday. Watch it on ABC WTVA.
