                    "GULF OF\u00a0FINLAND, Sept 17 (Reuters)\u00a0\u2013\u00a0Finnish authorities boarded and searched a target vessel in the Baltic Sea on Thursday in a live drill that officials said shows how seriously the region takes the threat of undersea sabotage after a string of incidents.\n\n\n\nFinland\u00a0and the wider Baltic Sea region\u00a0have experienced\u00a0ruptures of power cables, telecom lines and gas pipelines following Russia\u2019s\u00a0invasion of Ukraine\u00a0in 2022, raising concerns that critical infrastructure lacks sufficient protection.\n\n\n\nMasked officers from the coast guard, police and armed forces on Thursday fast-roped onto a vessel\u2019s deck from a helicopter, securing the crew and sweeping the ship room by room.\n\n\n\nCoast Guard Commander Ilja Iljin, who led the drill, said the exercise reflects what Helsinki considers \u201cthe new normal.\u201d\n\n\n\n\u201cIn the past two or three years we\u2019ve had several incidents in the Baltic related to the damaging of critical underwater infrastructure,\u201d Iljin said. \u201cSo we have to be ready for when the next event happens.\u201d\n\n\n\nSigns that a ship may be involved in cable damage include abrupt changes in speed or course as it passes over an undersea line, Iljin said.\n\n\n\nFinland\u2019s response has sharpened with each incident.
