ALGOMA, Miss. (WTVA) – A man is recovering after an attack by a pack of dogs.
Pontotoc County Sheriff Leo Mask said a man was attacked while walking along the Tanglefoot Trail about a mile south of Algoma.
The victim told investigators that the dogs knocked him to the ground, and that he used a stick to beat them off of him.
The sheriff said the victim was seriously injured on his arm, legs and hand.
Investigators have charged the owner of the dogs, who lives near the Tanglefoot Trail, with two counts of dog ordinance violation.
Both of those are misdemeanors.
Authorities said the dogs are alive. However, they have been taken out of state.
Sheriff Mask said people have been bitten by dogs on the Tanglefoot Trail before.
“Dogs have chased them and stuff like that,” the sheriff said. “But we patrol the trail seven days a week. And I’ve got people out there 12 hours a day, seven days a week.”
Algoma Mayor Noel McWhirter said the victim is recovering and encouraged people to continue using the trail.
“This is a rare incident that occurs here on the trail,” McWhirter said. “I would encourage the people to not let this be a deterrent to using the trail.”
Sheriff Mask urges anyone who has trouble along the Tanglefoot Trail to contact law enforcement immediately.
