ABBEVILLE, Miss. (WTVA) – A woman was rescued after nearly a day of being stranded in the woods.
The Lafayette County Sheriff’s Office reports that around 9 a.m. Monday, deputies were told a woman was missing in the southeast area of the Sardis Lake bottom.
The woman and her husband had been riding on an ATV when it broke down around 10 p.m. Sunday.
She was unable to leave, so her husband trekked to a shop in Abbeville to call 911.
Lafayette County Sheriff Joey East said the responding deputies found him covered in cuts and bruises.
Multiple groups pooled together to search the area, eventually finding her around 2 p.m. on Monday.
She was in bad health and dehydrated, the sheriff said.
“Although we found her at 2:00,” East said. “We couldn’t get her out until almost 5:00 because we had so many side-by-sides, you know, vehicles in there. We kept getting stuck. It was so bad. Lake bottom had recently receded, so everything was wet. It was just one of the worst scenarios you could get to.”
East said it was “just the grace of God that” they found the four-wheeler where it had broken down.
Sheriff East said a handful of search crew members were taken to the hospital due to heat exhaustion and dehydration.
They have all since been released.
The woman was also taken to the hospital and, as of Tuesday, remains there, the sheriff said.
East said she is doing better and could be released soon.
