BORIS Johnson has blasted “warped” Vladimir Putin after he escaped across the Polish border when a Russian drone struck a train minutes behind his. Our train just had an evacuation warning but could proceed to Dorohusk.” Bildt praised the “very good safety system” but warned that Russia’s attacks were “intensifying”. Following the attack, Mr Johnson said: “I don’t know what warped logic drove Putin to blow up a stationary Ukrainian locomotive on the Polish border this morning. “What we can say for sure is that this is the kind of random and senseless attack Ukrainians are enduring every day – even on civilian railways. “So far Putin has been responsible for the deaths of 1700 staff of Ukrzaliznytsia – Ukrainian Railways. They and their daily passengers are absolutely heroic.” The former PM went on to blast the British government, saying: “When are we going to give them the air defences they need? Why won’t we unfreeze Putin’s cash and give it to Ukraine? Britain could show a lead. “The Ukrainians are going to win – that much was clear from the last three days in their wonderful country. “But we will get this dreadful war over much faster if we all get serious and give them what they need and deserve.” Johnson’s journey ground to a halt after the Russian strike blasted the preceding train on the Kyiv-Warsaw line, which was carrying more than 200 passengers. The train was struck just one mile from the Polish border. No one was injured, according to Ukrainian railway authorities. Shocking images show a huge fireball engulfing train tracks and flames lighting up the night sky. Also on Mr Johnson’s train was Günter Sautter, Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s foreign and security-policy adviser. There is no indication that their train was struck by a drone but the passengers were evacuated as a precaution. Johnson and other prominent Western figures had been attending the 2026 annual meeting of the Yalta European Strategy (YES) in Kyiv. Russian independent news outlet Agentsvo reported: “A day after Putin threatened Europe with war, Russia struck the Kyiv–Warsaw train. “The strike affected a special train carrying European politicians and diplomats.” The attack comes days after US envoys visited Kyiv and Moscow hoping to revive Washington-led talks on ending Europe’s worst conflict since World War II, without securing a breakthrough. Nato member Poland said a second drone struck near a border crossing, prompting Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski to accuse Putin of “escalating” the conflict. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Moscow struck the train “deliberately”. He also accused Russia of attacking rail and energy infrastructure, as well as civilian buildings across the country, including in the west. Zelensky said: “It is precisely to prevent these strikes from spreading further into Europe that Ukrainian men and women fight every day, give their lives, and do not allow the aggression to expand. With Ukrainian airspace closed, trains to neighbouring Poland have been one of the main routes out of the war-torn country, often carrying refugees and packed with women and children. Neither country reported casualties and Intercity said the service was delayed by more than six hours but would travel on to Warsaw after border checks were completed. Poland’s interior minister Marcin Kierwinski said one drone struck near the Dorohusk-Yagodyn border crossing, while the other hit the passenger train. “We are treating these events with the utmost seriousness. The situation is being monitored on an ongoing basis,” Kierwinski said. 3 comments3
